    Pros

Benefits at the University of Michigan are very valuable, including retirement, vacation, health insurance and dental. Thank you very much.

    Cons

With ever changing budget cuts, one may wonder how long the current benefits will be sustained. Hopefully sustained for the long term.

    Advice to Management

Keep in mind the financial difference and needs of staff and faculty at all levels.

I have been working at University of Michigan full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great school with lots of science funding and plenty of intellectual stimulation. The quality of mentorship in the Cell & Developmental Biology program has been great and I am enabled to do impactful, basic biological science research. There is also a great environment of collaboration and sharing amongst the labs within my department

    Cons

The area is northern Michigan, so the winter is always rough (although manageable). There is no parking on campus, but the university and public transit systems are fairly good.

    Advice to Management

Plenty of highly motivated students doing collaborative basic biological science research. High emphasis on research and training future biologists

I worked at University of Michigan full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Health coverage is comprehensive and reasonable; retirement investment options and contribution are good; holiday, vacation and sick leave are fantastic; free bus pass is outstanding if you can afford to live in the A2 area.

    Cons

Although there is attention to wellness, gym memberships are still pricey and not all that convenient for most of campus.

    Advice to Management

Parking is expensive, but so is living withing public transportation options within the city of Ann Arbor. Work with the city's public transportation to make park&ride more convenient and attractive. Support efforts to expand and extend public transportation to towns and cities within 20 or 30 miles of the city.

I worked at University of Michigan full-time

    Pros

I worked in the Shared Services Center and they offered flexible schedules. I did four tens and LOVED it

    Cons

Put a lot of emphasis on metrics. I personally believe in quality over quantity and sometimes felt the quality was sacrificed in order to produce a higher output of numbers

    Advice to Management

    Quality over quantity

I have been working at University of Michigan part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It is a very casual setting and a comfortable work environment. We work on studies that have real world safety applications

    Cons

Someone there is not much work to do. That being said, that is not always a bad thing. Work is never stressful so I guess it could be possible to get bored. Not me.

    Advice to Management

I have nothing to say to my bosses. I think they do a great job providing a good work environment and organizing the work that needs to get done.
