    Pluses and Minuses

    Pros

It depends upon the department you are at. Some are wonderful to work in and some are not. Some positions are valued and some are just there to get the job done. The University is trying to be better but they have a long way to go to make staff feel as valued as the faculty are.

    Cons

There is a definite divide in how faculty and staff are treated. While some instructions come from high up - chancellor or U of M president, the department deans or heads often skew the instructions and end up shorting the staff - yet again. They do not advance people just because you are doing a good job. To do so you must fill out a pile of paperwork and get your reasoning justified, which is extremely hard to do. Once you start at your salary you came in with, you are stuck at that with tiny regents raises.
