I have been working at University of Mississippi Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Insurance is awesome plus you get a 20% discount with UMMC providers after meeting deductible. Food is good depending on the day. The people you work with become like family. Pay could be better but only because you are required to contribute to PERS. My department has great teamwork and I enjoy going to work most day.

    Cons

Parking!!! Staduim parking is horrible and you get tickets for parking on campus. There are no raises so don't even ask. Moving up in the company depends on who you know.

    Advice to Management

There are too many talented and educated people getting overlooked in basic positions with no guidance whatsoever of how to move up. Efforts are knocked down with no feedback on how to improve. This is frustrating and make people such as myself go outside of the company for leadership position when I would prefer to stay with the company.

I have been working at University of Mississippi Medical Center full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Insurance is cheap BUT you get what you pay for. Retirement is good if you can make it that long.

    Cons

Pay/titles not equal for people doing the same job, no job stability, no upward mobility, small town politics. Too many "Chief of" positions and lay-offs for front-line personnel.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring people from outside for upper level positions. A succession plan is not just something on your strategic plan to say we have one. Grow your own (not someone's kid or spouse) but tap into your own employees. We know this place better than people that come to work for 2-3 years then leave it a mess to clean up when they leave.

I have been working at University of Mississippi Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

UMMC has a great learning environment; there's always something to learn and someone to teach. Students, residents, and practitioners of all disciplines of medicine are abounding. There is a high volume of high acuity patients.

    Cons

Just as in most places in healthcare, staffing is usually tight; particularly on nights and weekends when management isn't around.

    Advice to Management

Listen more carefully to your front line when making decisions for day to day patient care.

    Pros

The 401k plan offered to employees is the best I've ever seen. Minimal micro-managing.

    Cons

Base salaries can be on the low side. Parking is awful.

I have been working at University of Mississippi Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits and retirement good way to learn about OR and instrumentation

    Cons

No future in this career unless you plan on becoming a Surgical Tech, the workload is huge with limited staff and your expected to do way more than you can.

    Advice to Management

Management knows what to do but with Administration breathing down everyone's necks they have no way of fixing the problems
