I worked at University of Missouri full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The pros are definitely the benefits and some of the people you work with.
The insurance is great even though I didn't get to use it long and the ability to take time off or leave early is pretty good. I loved working with one of my coworkers and some of the professors. The students are pretty good too. Normally they need something from you so they are super nice and polite.

    Cons

One HUGE downside is that people are super nosy around here. People are always up in your business. They are always asking who someone is and what they are doing there, why someones office door is open. I also had a coworker go through my personal email.
Another really big downside is the expensive parking. I mean the pay already sucks immensely and they of course take out taxes, insurance, and other benefits, then they take out a chunk for parking. Parking in which unless you show up early, you will be parking on the roof..... if you can find that. Not to mention people will just slam their doors into your brand new car and dent it....
Lastly, the professors. Most are pretty great, super kind, and super appreciative. However, some of the professors are EXTREMELY condescending and downright rude. They are entitled and want things immediately even if you have twelve other people in line in front of them. Their are some that no matter what you do will treat you like crap and will be super rude to you.
Also, the fact that layoffs are coming really makes morale terrible.

    Advice to Management

My advice for management would be appreciate your people more. The university has some super loyal and awesome people, however, they do not appreciate those hardworking and loyal people. Also, the people who are nosy and are infringing upon FERPA laws should be punished. I think that the little quiz is not enough, their needs to be actual training about the laws and privacy. When someone can go through your email and voicemail and they think it is okay and allowed because you are a lower staff member than them there is something wrong with that.

I worked at University of Missouri part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The recreation center is stellar, and the city is relatively small and pleasant. There doesn't seem to be much racial prejudice on campus.

    Cons

There is nobody in charge: tenured faculty do whatever they want, disregarding University policy whenever they want, and the University does nothing. Students are treated like they are children. Academic records have been "lost" at critical times (e.g. just before graduation). Bizarre thing happened, like a tenured journalism faculty blocked reporters from doing their job, and certain students with possibly untrue agendas banded together to get people fired. Not a happy place to work.

    Advice to Management

Students and non-tenured faculty/staff need to be treated with respect, and need to be "heard".

    Pros

Large company, room to grow, great benefits

    Cons

Communication and hiring are slow to happen

I worked at University of Missouri full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Pleasant coworkers
Standard work week with little to no overtime
    Good benefits
    Tons of sick time

    Cons

    Old-fashioned
    Bureaucratic
    Work was boring
No recognition for anything other than years of service
    A lot of needless meetings

    Advice to Management

Ditch the needless formalities and offer benefits that young people care about (flexible hours, alternative work spaces). Also make a better effort to deliver recognition to people in all departments and career levels, not just fundraising people.

I have been working at University of Missouri full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible time is a great perq. Benefits are good but have questionable future outlook. Strong encouragement for healthy living has been well implemented and supported.

    Cons

Higher ups don't appreciate the temporary nature of the research position and occasionally prohibit PIs from implementing pay raises that are written into grants.

I have been working at University of Missouri full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Always learning something new. Human Resources is always changing so where someone would think it is the same work day in and day out, it's really not.

    Cons

There really aren't any cons. Parking could be a con. Things are moving at such a fast pace that it would be nice to have a day to get caught up, but it's still exciting.

I have been working at University of Missouri part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

If you love kids you should work at Adventure Club! I worked at Adventure Club for 2 years and have formed great bonds with my co-workers and with the children at my school.

    Cons

There will be quite a bit of training each semester, but it's tolerable!
