    Positive Outlook

I worked at University of North Alabama full-time

    Pros

Benefits, culture, environment are great! Employees have the opportunity to have input into major decisions because of the "Shared Governance" concept. Tuition remission for employees, their spouses and children is very good.

    Cons

The general economy in Northwest Alabama is not good. It could be difficult for a spouse to obtain meaningful employment in this area other than the University.

    Pros

People know you by name. Growth is easy with hard work!

    Cons

I have none! Some may like the small town but to me you can really shine!

  5. "Great university family!"

    Pros

Small campus, easy to navigate, friendly & helpful folks, great connection with local community, easy access for staff & local residents.

    Cons

Paperwork traffic, rules, guidelines & expectations not always clear; small-town attitude that "everybody knows that" and "it's how we've always done it;" pay not on par with other state schools.

    Advice to Management

Imagine yourself to be a new employee who knows NOTHING about the school or the area: What do you need to know?

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at University of North Alabama part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Safe and friendly location, near the beautiful Tennessee River and downtown Florence, AL, which is small but lively. Big annual blues and Renaissance festivals. Great restaurants and shops within walking distance of campus.

    Cons

Under-resourced chemistry department. Low pay for adjuncts (that's nothing new anywhere). Lecture and lab courses could be better coordinated. Not enough healthy food options on campus. Some parts of campus don't feel entirely safe at night.

    Advice to Management

Please heat the labs adequately! Coordinate pre-lab lecture and lab spaces so that they are physically closer to one another. Give adjuncts the entrance keys to department offices, so they can access it on weekends.

    Pros

    Great benefits.
    Peaceful city.
    Great weather.
    Good working environment.
Colleagues are reasonable and respectful of each other
Because of the relative small size of the city and the University, most people will know you by your name, which can be a pro or a con depending on your personality.

    Cons

    Politics
Florence is peaceful but a very small city
UNA is on proration so bonuses or pay increases are out of question

    Advice to Management

Sometimes the Management has a tendency to be a little autocratic. It would help to enlist more feedback from the mid and low level staff.
