    I worked at University of Ottawa as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Great people who know their stuff. They go from 0 to extinguishing fires in no time. Lots to learn and loads of freedom. Great environment to work in. Great hours. Accommodating to course schedule.

    Cons

    Odd office layout. basement of old building. work is divided such that no one really knows what the others are doing.

    Advice to Management

    Have them move you above ground somewhere, would really improve moral.

    Pros

    Friendly people, positive workplace, lots of natural light, opportunity to work for different graduate departments varied the work experience

    Cons

    Got the job through placement agency so wage was quite low, and since it was contract there were no opportunities for advancement

    Benefits, flexible hours, gym and sports facilities

    Cons

    Obnoxious and political Management, low salary, no training, internal recruiting based on seniority and not on skills or performence, no way for career evolution

    Advice to Management

    Stop caring about you and yourself only .. there is lots of other people called employees.
    Stop the political aspect for a minute and listen for once ... employee are in the front line.

    Well-paid job- reasonable hours- the work quality depends on the supervisor you work with.

    Cons

    Depending on the supervisor, there are sometimes higher expectations than what is stated in the contract, which leads to additional working hours.

    Since there're many independent research activities take place at the University of Ottawa, I don't think that I can point out any specific advice.

    Pros

    You have very experienced researcher here, and they love about talking their research. If you want to do serious science here, this is a good place to be. The research environment is very collaborative, almost all labs are connected and equipments seems to be shared freely. There is always some nice scientific talk to go to as well.

    Cons

    As a post-doc, you don't have any benefits; parking in the hospital is expensive, and you are always assgined to a parking lot far away from where you work. Salary for a starting post-doc is pretty low

    Advice to Management

    employee need a better place to have lunch.
