I worked at University of Pennsylvania full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, decent pay. Many opportunities to move into different positions and different departments.

    Cons

Work culture somewhat cold, sanitized, where people can't be real with each other. There was a firm hierarchy that did not seem transparent and did not allow for employee input.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent. Seek input from employees and then utilize that input. Offer more flexibility to employees in terms of work hours and such.

I have been working at University of Pennsylvania full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Penn has a friendly, inclusive atmosphere.
The employee benefits are seriously outstanding. They even include tuition at Penn, and assistance with purchasing a home in West Philadelphia.
The work is satisfying and respectful of a healthy work/life balance. It feels like they really do invest in your well being as a whole. My life is substantially better than before I worked at Penn.

    Cons

Penn is a BIG place. While it's true that you technically work for the University as a whole, your experience at work will depend more on *where* you work. There are many different sub-entities based on school and/or type of work, with each being independently managed. Some places will be better managed than others, and some will have more competitive salaries than others. Such is life in a huge research university.

It's near impossible to get fired, at least where I work. It takes committing an actual crime to get the boot. In some ways, it's nice to know you've got job security, but if you're unlucky, it can also mean being permanently stuck under incompetent management. When things need to change, it can be hard to instigate that change.

    Pros

As an elite university, Penn offers a wide range of opportunities and connections. Your career can easily grow within Penn or provide you with the connections to grow outside of it.

    Cons

As a university, what you will do is greatly varied and experience will vary as a result.
