Research at the University of Pittsburgh
Feb 21, 2017 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Pitt has excellent benefits and lots of interesting research studies from some of the best investigators in the country. My position has afforded me the opportunity to work with a lot of people and provide quality research that was personally rewarding.
Cons
The downside to working at the University of Pittsburgh is the low pay. This last fiscal budget resulting in a meager wage increase, which was extremely discouraging. While I get a lot of personal gain from my position, the wage increase is not proportional to the cost of living in Pittsburgh currently.

Pros
-healthcare benefits are comprehensive and reasonably priced -education benefits are great for those who have college-aged kids or those who are interested in exploring additional education opportunities.
Cons
-compensation is lower than the market rate, but the benefits package does make up for lower salary

Livable pay, interesting work, preparation for further education, and
Jun 23, 2019 - Research Assistant II in Pittsburgh, PARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Benefits are great: -Education benefit gives 90% off up to 6 credits of graduate school classes. That does change a fair amount once you've passed their allocated tax free limit as it gets charged at around 35%, meaning you might pay 2,000 dollars in taxes for what would be a 600 dollar semester post benefit. -Generous health care and dental. Health care plan goes through UPMC -Retirement benefits are up to 8% matching 100% with vesting at 3 years. This depends entirely on the lab you are with but in my case the lab gives me extremely interesting work I'm passionate about with plenty of freedom and flexibility in what to work on and when to work on it.
Cons
The pay is probably not as good as can be offered in industry. The conditions of the job are pretty much entirely up to the specific lab you work in so it's hard to predict what the culture and expectation will be like if you're not already acquainted with the group. As is true in pretty much all of academia it can be hard to fully put the work down when you leave the workplace. Again, this varies by lab but it's very common for people to do extra things from home or on weekends if they feel it will help their group or advance their project.

Great Entry Level Job
Jun 21, 2019 - Research Assistant in Pittsburgh, PARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
If you're interested in research, Pitt is definitely a place to be. There are so many entry level positions to start your career. The benefits and time off are decent and you get at least 90% off tuition if you're looking to continue your education.
Cons
The HR system is a disaster. It's nearly impossible to get a raise as a research assistant based on your work. My supervisor submitted a request to HR to give me a raise and it was denied. The salary is next to nothing, but the education benefits made up for it for me.
