Low pay / low morale / unable to advance career within
Jan 15, 2016 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The health care and the tuition benefit have been the best things about working here. I, as well as my dependents, have been able to obtain degrees from an excellent University at a fraction of the cost.
Cons
Pay is so low I could never support myself without my husband's excellent salary in corporate America. The yearly 1% increase doesn't even keep up with the rise in the cost of living. Poor morale in most departments. No one cares. I've seen vindictiveness from administrators who have power to slow processes down. I finished my degree two years ago, but don't have a connection to advance within Pitt, with nowhere to go in my current department. Nepotism is an issue across the University. There are multiple family members working in the same department. Or the department already has someone in mind and are going through the motions of interviewing the mandatory three people. We have high-level admins making $140,000/yr. and they barely put in part-time hours. It's not a very happy place. Particularly in Arts and Sciences.

Great entry-level experience.

The benefits are excellent. Accrual a lot of time off. 401K with company match. Education assistance. People that work here are generally good as well.
Cons
The pay is not what you would expect from a university and it is difficult to receive a raise unless transferring from position to position.
- Current Employee★★★★★
Pros
University of Pittsburgh is a great research university. It also provides great benefits for its employees
Cons
The pay is not too significant and there is not much room for promotion in my position.
- Former Employee, more than 5 years★★★★★
Pros
Benefits medical, dental, vision, 403B
Cons
They treat employees like children with unnecessary and unlimited restrictions and do not pay well 1-2% salary increase. For example, if you are 5 minutes late or leave 5 minutes early, you are criticized even though you stay later or come in earlier without overtime pay. Very little positive motivation and kudos!

Pros
Very easy to work around scheduling, people care about work life balance.
Cons
Pay is ok; it is for sure on the lower end of the scale and so it can be frustrating.

Post-doctoral scholar
Jan 2, 2015 - Postdoctoral Scholar in Pittsburgh, PARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
-typical research university setting, however such a large university does offer more resources than some smaller schools -post-doc positions are variable in every aspect, but there is an active program to promote collaboration
Cons
-of course the pay is very low for a Ph.D. level position but that is standard for post-docs -the benefits are poor, no retirement, matching of funds or otherwise for post-docs, healthcare is through UPMC which

Low end pay, okay opportunity
May 29, 2022 - Content Writer in Pittsburgh, PARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Working in the university setting and system are good, set you up to move on to other positions later. Once you’re in, it’s easy to stay a part of the system. Tuition reimbursement
Cons
Pay isn’t great and can vary widely among departments and schools for the same job. I made $10 in one office and $16 in another for the same job/title.

Good place to work
Jun 10, 2022 - Research Technician in Pittsburgh, PARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Very interesting research and a lot of different interesting areas to explore.
Cons
The pay was a bit low relative to the work but it was good as a post bac. job
