Tries hard to pretend it’s not a giant company.
Sep 1, 2021 - Research TechnicianRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great health and education benefits, good people.
Cons
Nearly impossible to get advances in salary or position without bouncing around from department to department. HR works against the employees quoting policy even when department and direct supervisors try to get more for their employees.

Pros
-Flexible work schedule with my PI, Hours were not set. As long as I got my work done and completed the correct number of hours per week, that was fine
Cons
-Salary was not enough to compensate for the work being done and for level of experience -Was wearing multiple hats at work. I was doing 3 jobs alone.

Low pay / low morale / unable to advance career within
Jan 15, 2016 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The health care and the tuition benefit have been the best things about working here. I, as well as my dependents, have been able to obtain degrees from an excellent University at a fraction of the cost.
Cons
Pay is so low I could never support myself without my husband's excellent salary in corporate America. The yearly 1% increase doesn't even keep up with the rise in the cost of living. Poor morale in most departments. No one cares. I've seen vindictiveness from administrators who have power to slow processes down. I finished my degree two years ago, but don't have a connection to advance within Pitt, with nowhere to go in my current department. Nepotism is an issue across the University. There are multiple family members working in the same department. Or the department already has someone in mind and are going through the motions of interviewing the mandatory three people. We have high-level admins making $140,000/yr. and they barely put in part-time hours. It's not a very happy place. Particularly in Arts and Sciences.

Love my job hate my salary

Very meaningful work and great people to work with
Cons
Not great salaries especially for the team you have to put in to give your all.

Good for getting the Permanent Resident Card (green card)
Aug 6, 2022 - Research Instructor in Pittsburgh, PARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
If you would like to get the Permanent Resident Card (green card), you may need to work here for 4-7 years (after using working visa J1 and H1). The benifits of 401K (with 8% match) and taking a bus for free with photoID are good.
Cons
The salary of postdoctoral research or scientist is always lower than the national average salary in United States. Additionally, the medical plan is restricted to UPMC.
- Current Employee★★★★★
Pros
It's a good city to live in. The employee benefits are very good as well. They have good insurance coverage and lot of academic benefits. If you are interested in taking a few courses, you can do that with 10% of the actual fee, which is great. The work experience has been good too. Peaceful to work.
Cons
The salaries are a bit on the lower on the side for academic staff even in the research dept. I wish it was at least 20% higher.

Working at the University of Pittsburgh is an educational experience with many rewards.
Aug 8, 2012 - Administrator I in Pittsburgh, PARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Educational benefits for employees and their families. Pitt ID badge permits full time Pat Transit transport convenience allowing access to Pittsburgh's cultural district. Growing and developing area creates many new opportunities for employees and students. Beautiful buildings with historical value.
Cons
Traffic congestion with limited parking. Limited parking increases parking costs. Increased company benefits lowers the salary level. Salaries and wage increases dependent on the state government which causes issues in the availability of yearly raises.

Pros
tons of free research resources and reimbursement opportunities; pipelines in place for academic career advancement (if wanted); free public transportation; low cost of living
Cons
base salary is low; planning community events is tricky since postdocs could be based in labs all over the city

Great Place depending on your department
Apr 21, 2015 - Academic Advisor in Pittsburgh, PARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great benefits and time off. Opportunities to get involved in other areas through committees, staff organizations and volunteer opportunities.
Cons
Career advancement is solely dependent on your department-some departments have clear promotion tracks while others do not. Salary is capped so that you can only earn 10% more when you change jobs. It is better to leave the university and be hired back at a higher salary than count on getting a significant increase on a yearly basis.

Pros
Nothing to report for advancement
Cons
Base line salary was so low and I had to have welfare assistance just to get by.
