I have been working at University of Reading full-time

    Pros

I worked at the University for 4 years and the brand name is good

    Cons

But one does not feel valued, students are treated like clients at the expense of staff stress and well-being.

    Advice to Management

Senior management needs to treat academic staff betterand value them. Also their workloads should be managed so that they are not over capacity.

I have been working at University of Reading full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Most staff members are friendly and students treat you well.

    Cons

Wages are rubbish. Employees are not treated well. There is a lot of bullying from management.

    Advice to Management

    Be kinder

I worked at University of Reading full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good teaching/research balance. Amazing colleagues who supported me to build up my initial research portfolio. Good brand to apply for founding from.

    Cons

Management that overspends on outside consultancies. Dismiss them from the grounds, but decides to cut the services of well-functioning entities. Good schools were shut down and an exodus of good high impact staff left in the wake. The management could not have made worse decisions, and that after an alleged $32M pound expense. How they still are there in their high paying jobs is beyond me!

    Advice to Management

Leave. If you feel that you need to stay, then do your work rather than pay expensive consultants to come and do it for you! If you feel you need help, then UoR does have international calibre researchers in Henley Business School who might be able to help you!

I have been working at University of Reading full-time

    Pros

Excellent facilities and staff, an abundance of lovely scenery. A great place to work, very fair hours. Easily accessible.

    Cons

Some of the timings are so spread out that it is difficult to fit in activities in between jobs due to this format.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work, all is going well, i am enjoying myself, try and continue in the same way you are doing as it is working very well.

    Pros

Great campus and environment, plenty of facilities and parking. Laid back culture in the department I was in.
There is a lot going on in the evening with free conferences and great place for CPD.

    Cons

Salary was low in an expensive town to live in. Any young person moving to the area would not be able to afford their own apartment. Limited or no advancement opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Keep the atmosphere going, but pay more where you can. You can attract some of the best young people in the country but if you want to keep them they will need to be able to live in the area long term.

I have been working at University of Reading full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of really good and friendly people to work with on an operational level

    Cons

There has been an awful lot of change, lots of people have left or are new and so in many areas people are extremely stretched. Very political.

    Advice to Management

Look after your staff; make sure they have the support they need, the training and development as well as a positive working environment.
