I worked at University of Sheffield full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good work life balance, good location, further career opportunities, good benefits including activities to improve health and well being.

    Cons

Not willing to share cons on a public website, other than some areas feel like you are in the heart of public sector steeped in bureaucracy.

    Advice to Management

Need to be more business minded, and think outside of the Russell Group, if you want to compete with the best.

I worked at University of Sheffield (Less than a year)

    Pros

Plenty of freedom in terms of the hours you work although this will vary considerably between departments and supervisors. I had a s good relationship with my supervisor so I found my time there very enjoyable. Good university to work for with a large network and resources.

    Cons

Just like most other academic institutions. Different departments vary considerably. Chemical & Biological Engineering, at least the biological side of the department could be better organized and more collaboration between the research groups.

    Advice to Management

More collaboration and the sharing of resources between biological groups within Chemical & Biological Engineering should be encouraged. The Head of Department has changed since I worked there so things could have improved.

I have been working at University of Sheffield part-time

    Pros

Great salary and flexibility. Really enjoying my time here as a careers advisor. Love the work environment and culture.

    Cons

Perhaps can be difficult to move upwards due to the whole university sector losing money from the government at the moment which affects people on the ground

    Pros

Very cutting edge science. Open friendly atmosphere. You're exposed to many different kinds of science and scientists and it's easy to interact with everyone.

The city itself is small but very friendly. Rent/house prices are great. The Peaks are around the corner.

    Cons

The university itself did not have too many cons. The city is not as lively as London or Manchester.
