I have been working at University of Southampton full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The campus is great and constantly evolving. The research facility for my PhD was world-class. My colleagues were knowledgeable and thriving for the best research.

    Cons

Some oddities on campus such as food prices that are higher than outside of campus. Sometimes the administration can be tedious but in general every problem is solved in reasonable time. The city of Southampton is not great although it is experiencing a lot of change for the better.

    Advice to Management

Working conditions need to be prioritized over outreach. Southampton uni cannot accommodate as many students as it thinks it can in the current environment.

I have been working at University of Southampton full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Russell Group status
    - Research is well-funded and tends to be quite novel
    - Friendly university
    - Highfield campus has a lot going on, and is visually appealing
    - Plenty of societies
    - Some professors/lecturers leaders within their fields
    - University bus service is regular and the routes are quite good

    Cons

    - Faculty organisation is abysmal; communication with students especially dire in Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Health Sciences
    - Student Union either mis-manage budget or are under-funded
    - Disjointed feeling between satellite campuses
    - Postgraduate students are under represented, although this has gotten better over the past year
    - Clique behaviour and favorutism between staff members is noticeable
    - Supervisors in managerial positions have not necessarily had the correct training, and so subordinates feel disgruntled and poorly managed

    Advice to Management

The key areas to be addressed are budget management, faculty structure, and postgraduate student (with emphasis on welfare, supervisor training, representation, and career development).

I have been working at University of Southampton full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very flexible working hours depending on supervisor. As long as the research is done you can come and go pretty much as you please.

    Cons

Limited careers advice unless you seek it out yourself.
Very 'academic' working environment, quiet office might not be for everyone.

    Advice to Management

Consider students future career prospects more and allow time to develop technical and soft skills.
I had some problems with my supervisor but these aren't generic to Southampton.

I have been working at University of Southampton full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Travelling a lot is a great benefit. There is a huge amount of freedom and flexibility in working hours and decisions about your work.

    Cons

The pressure to publish all results can very quickly become very daunting. One often feels the need to finish off projects which become less interesting or simply impossible to achieve.

    Advice to Management

Be more respectful of the students and their time, give them projects which are interesting.

I have been working at University of Southampton full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good resources for a PhD student
    Nice leafy campus
Depending on the supervisor a good work life balance is possible

    Cons

Chemistry department currently has a 36 hour minimum before any money can be claimed for marking or demonstrating, pretty sure this is the only department in the UK doing this.
Some members of staff think shouting is the way forward.

I worked at University of Southampton full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A lot of engagement between departments and faculties, focus on interdisciplinarity.
Many opportunities to network, and learn about pretty much anything you want.

    Cons

Too much emphasis on research output and not teaching ability.
Good lecturers aren't recognised, which often result in them leaving.

    Advice to Management

Reward good lecturers not just good researchers, or you will lose more of them.
Please build modern accommodation for the mathematics department, relocation to a place that isn't in constant disrepair is long overdue!
