    Pros

This position pays your tuition and offers a stipend. The fact that departments rely heavily on graduate assistants to help professors deal with increasing class sizes offers a lot of job security.

    Cons

Low stipend amount hovers just around subsistence wages. Professional opportunities and chances to make extra money are not advertised and often given to favorites. Health insurance covers traumatic care, but it is basically a discount program for everything else. Department cultures vary, but Graduate Assistants are often treated like children rather than junior members of the academy. There are a lot of unwritten rules about "volunteer" service.

    Pros

Location and campus climate make this a desirable place to be.

    Cons

Salary compression is a real problem. Drives well educated individuals out of State for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Develop a strategy to retain valued employees that do not choose to seek Tenure track appointments.

I have been working at University of Southern Mississippi part-time

    Pros

A great community to work with. I have been a part-time employee for nearly five years and I really enjoy the people with whom I work.

    Cons

I would like to see better dental benefits for graduate students. Because graduate student stipends are small, they need to have better benefits to ensure health.

    Advice to Management

Please listen to the students' pleas for better healthcare and benefits.

I have been working at University of Southern Mississippi full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Biology department at USM is awesome. Particularly MS-INBRE is god's gift for Biology department. We have almost all the equipments for molecular and biochemical work, and equipments are being purchased continuously. I am sure, in the coming years, it will be even better and competitive place to work for.

    Cons

University management should pay attention towards student's employment after graduation. They should establish a very strong campus placement cell. It is required for the campus placement cell to figure out the skill requirements (along with degree) for the companies for jobs, and make the respective departments to include them in the curriculum. They should organize regular workshops to let students know the skill requirements for jobs. It is lot of work...but more than worth for USM.

    Advice to Management

Keep library open for 24 hours, even in the week ends

    Pros

    Cons

Class schedules are set, do you have to work with those hours. Can't really avoid that. That's the mayor of the job.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing.
