    Negative Outlook

I have been working at University of Sussex full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Work/life balance is good
    Most people are very nice

    Cons

Many "old-timer" staff who block any real progress or new initiatives.
Bad management due to people in long service getting promoted rather than people with managerial skills.
Hierarchical structure makes it difficult to get positive ideas heard.
No support from HR and disorganised induction process.
Working environment is bad, no natural light or windows.
Too much outsourcing: this wastes huge amounts of money and there are not enough skills being built in house.
    IT systems are pretty shoddy.

    Advice to Management

Lack of opportunities for growth mean that the good people leave within a year or so, and the people who just want to plod along make it into management positions because of long service. Consider seconding people to other parts of the University and retiring some of the dead wood.

I have been working at University of Sussex full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Good services: Library, IT, Student Union and Student support, etc...
    - Great teaching staff - dynamic course, developing a range of different skills such as presentation and group work.

    Cons

Improvements are needed for the admin side of uni, slow release back of grades and the IT systems seem to always be crashing and take time to fix.

    Advice to Management

Spend more money investing in admin and IT services so that issues are dealt with quickly.
