I have been working at University of Sydney as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Best pay for Universities in Sydney, great academic staff, high Superannuation contribution, hours can be flexible (depending on your supervisor). Not much stress/overtime at all

    Cons

working hours can be inflexible compared to other universities, for example coming in early and leaving early is usually allowed but depending on your supervisor your hours may be set 9-5. This can be bad if you have to travel far and are trying to avoid peak hour traffic. Also there are some personalities that feel the need to micro-manage

    Advice to Management

weed out the power hungry and overly controlling staff that cause disruption in an otherwise perfect environment. ie areas where staff turnover is high may be an indication of this

I worked at University of Sydney full-time

    Pros

Flexible work hours; reasonable compensation; great super of 17%; with 10,000 employees there are limitless resources at your fingertips.

    Cons

Too much red tape and bureaucracy - if you have an idea or vision it is incredibly hard to make progress through all the levels of approval and policies. Everyone is always 'too busy' which makes it hard to set meetings and thus projects take a very long time. The professional service units and the faculties all operate as their own organisation each with their own goals and agenda's. This is fine, but a holistic university strategic vision needs to filter its way down from the top so that employees in service units and faculties are aware of the 'bigger picture' and can instil a culture and strategy accordingly.

    Advice to Management

Think more broadly regarding ALL aspects of the university so that the university can move forward as one unit. Get the PSU's and faculties collaborating more so that there is less cross over of responsibilities and more common knowledge so that everyone is on the same page and is working towards a common goal.

I have been working at University of Sydney as a contractor

    Pros

Pretty good people who are usually polite. Friendly management with a positive people culture. Higly intelligent workforce often sourced from the university.

    Cons

Many people stuck in their ways. Slow to get things done and enlist change; in some cases even for trivial things.

    Advice to Management

New senior management in ICT who look to be on the right track. Keep trying to know a little about every worker and make them feel welcome. Keep improving information flow in a set sytamatic way to increase understanding of functionality and keep politics low.

I have been working at University of Sydney full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Beautiful campus! Smart people across the University if you take the the initiative to meet folks. New resources available, such as early career network

    Cons

Too much stress, over work, competition -- makes for fear and exhaustion. The Uni lives in the shadow of G 8 rather than cultivating its unique strengths

    Advice to Management
