I have been working at University of Tennessee Health Science Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

good work ethics and mutual respect

    Cons

often the migrant temporary workers (postdoctoral fellows) are not given enough paid holidays!

    Advice to Management

The migrant workers on visa are also given only 2 weeks paid holiday. This is annoying, as the USA VISA renewal takes much longer than the 2 weeks!

I have been working at University of Tennessee Health Science Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Tennessee has no state tax.

    Cons

    No appreciation for Hard work.

    Advice to Management

Postdoc committee should work for making better policies online and implement it with compulsion otherwise hardworking people will have zero growth despite contributing to mission and vision of the organization.

I have been working at University of Tennessee Health Science Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You can go to school free. But it will not get you a raise. (See Cons!)

    Cons

I have been an employee for a while now. I just had my performance review and I am not at all happy with what I learned. I was told that as an employee of The University of Tennessee (Memphis), I cannot expect to be compensated for any degrees or experience I had when I arrived. The only way an employee's salary will be increased is by an across the board raise (3% if at all), or if they apply for and get a higher pay grade job. That may seem reasonable, but listen to this. In my department there are many people with varying degrees. One of them has a GED but has been with UTHSC for a long time. One of them has been with UTHSC for 5 years and has 3 Master's degrees pertaining to what she does. The GED person makes $20/hr. The one with 3 MS's makes $15/hr. If somebody can explain to me how a University deems a person with a GED on the same level as a person with 3 Master's Degrees, please do.

    Advice to Management

I don't know what to say to you except, "Shame on all of you!"

    Pros

Laid back atmosphere; lots of good people; fantastic benefits; decent job security

    Cons

The Memphis weather and possibly the location. I'm constantly bothered by panhandlers while walking to my car. For certain employees, there may not be a possibility for long-term advancement.

    Advice to Management

There's not much I can suggest in terms of changes. So far, it's been a very open and inclusive environment and I feel like my superiors treat me as an equal.

I have been working at University of Tennessee Health Science Center full-time

    Pros

It is a nice place to work with many core facilities to assist with research. Importantly the atmosphere is laid back.

    Cons

There is little upward movement unless you have been there for the maximum allowed time and then your PI might move you to a staff position. The benefits are also a con.
