I have been working at University of Tennessee Health Science Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Hey, at least I have health insurance.

    Cons

Absolute terrible place to work with atrocious politics. Incompetent staff know how to work the system and others at the top are afraid to make changes even though they know it is needed. I've been told more than once: "it's happening all over campus", "you will have to wait until they retire", etc. If you want to do nothing and feel purposeless, this is the place for you. If you want to make change, better go to HR or risk being set up for anything and everything. Do not confuse UTHSC with UT; they are not the same in any aspect!

    Advice to Management

Keep it coming new HR Alston all stars. I feel for you and the long road you have, but please keep supporting those in the field trying to make this a better place.

    Pros

Once hired impossible to get fired.

    Cons

HR/administration is completly useless. Screwup ALL paperwork repeatedly. The university REALLY needs to "clean house". Waste of taxpayers' money.

    Advice to Management

Clean house. Take inventory of what your faculty and especially staff REALLY do and how productive they REALLY are.

    Pros

Benefits...great benefits. Time off is fantastic. The institution shuts down the week of Christmas and New Years. The day after thanksgiving as well. 2 vacation days a month and one sick day too. Thus, you almost get five weeks vacation time a year.

    Cons

Government job. Incompetence runs throughout the organization and it doesn't skip levels of hierarchy. There are Dumb @$$ from top to bottom.

    Advice to Management

Saying something is a waste of my time. They would never listen anyway, thus, this is my twenty words summed: You Suck...

I have been working at University of Tennessee Health Science Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You can literally do ANYTHING (or nothing at all) and not get fired.

    Cons

Generally low pay even for Memphis - St. Jude pays about 60% more for equivalent hourly positions and has better benefits. Administration will listen to employee feedback, yet nothing is ever done. Most administrative staff are incompetent and offices constantly lose paperwork. No workplace culture. Generally, UTHSC is just a very frustrating place to work and there are no real "pros" that can distract you from how miserable this place is.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of people who are incompetent or train them and hold them to higher standards. Make an effort to actually follow through on suggestions after asking for employee feedback.

    Cons

    Top heavy management
    Management group-think, bureaucratic
Lack of diversity in higher management
    Pay inequity
College leadership not held accountable to fairness with staff
    Staff apathy

    Advice to Management

I worked at University of Tennessee Health Science Center full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You might have an opportunity for advancement if you are there long enough.

    Cons

Wasn't given enough opportunities to utilize key skills. Didn't learn enough about job environment and responsibilities during interview. Led to struggles in performance and relationships with coworkers.

    Advice to Management

Be more forthcoming with job expectations so there are less misunderstandings and unreasonable expectations..

    Pros

    Tennessee has no state tax.

    Cons

    No appreciation for Hard work.

    Advice to Management

Postdoc committee should work for making better policies online and implement it with compulsion otherwise hardworking people will have zero growth despite contributing to mission and vision of the organization.

I worked at University of Tennessee Health Science Center full-time

    Pros

A lot of time off and holidays. Nice people to work around for the most part, walkable campus. Generally not over managed

    Cons

Pay is very low even with experience. You are paid monthly. Over-extended coordinators and high turnover. You end up needing all of the days you are given in order to not be exhausted.

    Advice to Management

Work on lightening the work load so that the burnout rate isn't as high or supply appropriate compensation for the work load, attention to detail, and importance of the role in maintaining accreditation entails.
