I have been working at University of Tennessee full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Beautiful campus and surrounding area/city, most professors are nice and willing to talk whenever they aren't busy, stipend is okay, there is the perfect amount of hands-on/hands-off attention given to graduate students. As long as a graduate student is making progress and doing okay, all that professors really require are status updates. If a graduate student needs assistance, all he/she needs to do is ask, and professors are willing to accommodate.

    Overall excellent experience so far.

    Cons

The actual overall UT administration can be politically correct at times, but not anywhere near as much as some other places.

    Advice to Management

Keep letting departments manage themselves the way they are right now. Make sure to place an emphasis on both teaching and research.

I worked at University of Tennessee full-time

    Pros

Insurance, time off, newer buildings are nice to work in, job stability, p;aid time off

    Cons

Salary below private sector, not much real opportunity for advancement, required annual training not really relevant to job performance

  10. "University wants to improve but faculty are slow to change"

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook

I worked at University of Tennessee full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

UTK has invested in new buildings, new faculty hires, new laboratory equipment. Student body at UTK has alot of school spirit.

    Cons

The quality of graduate education and training is extremely contingent on the graduate advisor. I found it extremely difficult to conduct research and complete a thesis because my advisor was negligent and did not provide enough direction.

    Advice to Management

The administration needs to evaluate professors and their mentorship of students. They need to create a safe space where students can voice their concerns about their education and working environment.
