    Different experience for graduate students

Dec 26, 2016 - Graduate Research Assistant in Salt Lake City, UT
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The U has a dynamic and collaborative scientific community, and plenty of resource cores for easy access to more expensive or challenging research tools. The university is research focused in the sciences, so I think most professors have a good trade-off of research and teaching duties.

    Cons

The salary is quickly becoming insufficient (or already is) for most graduate students. The health insurance is skeletal and pretty much unmanageable for anyone who makes as little as we do.

    Chemistry TA

Jul 4, 2018 - Chemistry Teaching Assistant in Salt Lake City, UT
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Get to work with students, concrete students and own understanding, social experiences

    Cons

Do not put a large amount of emotional time and energy into the position as your effort will fall flat on its face. Students may praise you, but even with positive class evaluations do not expect any recognition or acknowledgement from the institution, most teachers and TAs are putting in minimum effort so do the same, get in get out ... thats the attitude after teaching many classes, I am an undergraduate and had to hold graduate students hands in my neighboring classrooms going so far as taking my time to explain things to their students who were always confused. Many incompetent graduate students here

    Pros

The salary is higher than average for graduate students, considering the cost of living in Salt Lake City.

    Cons

About living here, the winters are long, I prefer balanced season length.

    Great Place to Work

    Pros

A lot of flexibility in performing research is available to graduate students. The professors are great mentors and extremely helpful. All the necessary tools to conduct research are available.

    Cons

Sometimes it is stressful to meet deadlines on projects but I guess it would be like any other job. Although you don't have to work on weekends but as a student sometimes you might want to dedicate as much time as you can on your research.

Ask as many questions as possible before joining a lab

    Pros

For my field, one of the best departments in the nation. very entrepreneurial spirit with the Lassonde Center which pairs science/engineering graduate students with MBAs. great location to trails for running or mt biking.

    Cons

because it is a commuter campus there doesn't seem to be much community or intellectual gatherings. I wasn't impressed with the career service. As with any graduate program, ask as many questions as possible before joining a group. departments will not necessarily look out for you so you need to stick up for yourself, even if it means standing up to your advisor.

    Great facilities and work environment

Apr 8, 2019 - Graduate Research Assistant in Salt Lake City, UT

    Pros

The research facilities are top-notch and offer great equipment. Staff are easy to talk to and answer questions.

    Cons

Pay is not very good, however most graduate students are there for the education and experience, not to make money.
