I have been working at University of Washington full-time

    Pros

Great campus. Lots of support. Graduate health coverage is really good. Lots of access to services.

    Cons

Your advisor definitely makes your graduate experience. Unfortunately, if it doesn't work out the first time, changing advisors and projects can really set you back (potentially forcing you to leave with your Masters instead of PhD).

I have been working at University of Washington full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The benefits are wonderful, lots of time off, in my positions, lots of flexibility for schedules and working from home. The University is so big, if you get bored with your job , you can change jobs and not leave the University!

    Cons

    Lower pay than industry

    Advice to Management

Take care of your employees, treat them well, or they may move on

    Pros

    Culture, people and working environment.

    Cons

Compensation and merit raises are below average and when times are tough there are no annual increases.

    Advice to Management

If you want to keep people you need to pay more to keep up with the high cost of living in Seattle.

I have been working at University of Washington full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The work that the UW does with/for its students, faculty, and community is impressive, and the mission is very strong. You work with a number of brilliant and motivated colleagues. Campus is a fun work environment.

    Cons

The bureaucracy that comes with being a large public university can be stifling at times. Some faculty and staff can be difficult colleagues, and it varies widely throughout campus. Tenure is a very powerful thing, and enables bad behavior among some.
