I worked at University of Washington full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

so many opportunities; supporting students; great benefits

    Cons

limited pay; School's inability to manage out poor leaders

    Advice to Management

I worked for a horrific Associate Dean who has received at least a dozen complaints from female employees, yet the school didn't do (and has yet to do anything) about him. It's a shame because the University is world class, but if you can't get rid of people managers who are psychologically abusive to their team, there is a real problem with your values and upper leadership.

    Pros

Great benefits. Classified staff roles list the salary in the job posting

    Cons

Classified staff roles are harder to get performance raises. Harder to pivot and grow into Pro Staff roles

    Pros

Great benefits, everyone cares about your professional development and will support you as best as budget allows to go to conferences related to your job.

    Cons

Drama. There is a lot of fake personalities and hierarchical structures in place that people take very seriously. Also, many of those in management are very resistant to change (staff and professors alike).

    Advice to Management

Relax and open up to new ideas.

I have been working at University of Washington full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great benefits and time off one you been with company for a while

    Cons

While institution as a whole has great ambition and resources it is ultimately depends on your supervisor if you will have access to them. There is not standards that supervisors are being upheld to and everyone does whatever they believe to be fit. Performance evaluations are a joke because they are not tied in to anything. You can work nights and weekends if you like but that does not guarantee any position... advancement. Extremely bureaucratic.

    Advice to Management

Have supervisors and managers be required to go through annual supervisory trainings and evaluated base on how they helped they subordinates grow and develop in their positions.

I have been working at University of Washington full-time

    Pros

UW has great benefits. There are opportunities for continual learning (love being in Academia). Knowledge and opinions are respected. Staff is very diverse and intelligent.

    Cons

Pay is not competitive for the Seattle area. Tech changes move at a glacial pace. To keep costs down, they look for open source options but then don't want to customize in order to avoid tech debt.
