I have been working at University of Washington full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    freedom, good benefits, friendly environment

    Cons

    low salary, poor HR support

    Advice to Management

Slow spending on fancy buildings, ad campaigns, administration, and pay the people working in teaching and research what they are worth. Individual labs have successfully gained the funds (grants or contracts) to pay well, and are blocked from doing so by HR raise freeze policies. That is NOT university money, but the lab's individual grant money. The amazing people working here are fun to work with, but the... conditions under which they try to accomplish research and teaching are not particularly supportive. The response to recent unionizing of graduate students and postdocs has been hostile and combative. A change of title or pay rate takes half a year to get thru HR, even with full supervisor support. Fortunately, my supervisor is 100% supportive, and will fight for me, but the process has been/continues to be agonizing. Shame on you UW, you can do better.

I have been working at University of Washington part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Flexible schedule if you have a supportive manager. Generous leave package.

    Cons

Low salaries - 3-figures rare for staff Minimal opportunities to advance No training and development opportunities Poor - even harassing - behavior by faculty systemically tolerated. UW leadership does not walk the talk. Blurred work/life boundaries.

    Advice to Management

Increase salaries for staff to reduce turn-over, increase productivity, and provide a livable wage for Seattle. Enforce the faculty code.
