      Low pay, good academic development

Jan 22, 2020 - Graduate Research Assistant in Seattle, WA

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Good health insurance within the UW system, OK dental and vision. Top-notch research setting and resources, although the specifics vary between Colleges and Departments. Work/life balance is what you make of it.

      Cons

Paid as part-time employees (for being teaching assistants) when most graduate students actually put in 40 hours/week (teaching and research). Have to fight tooth and nail for any kind of raises (i.e. keep up with inflation) or fee reductions. Difficult to afford living in Seattle without loans/fellowship/family support if you have this job. UW administration is out of touch with the needs of its lowest paid employees.

      Great Experience

Oct 30, 2019 - Graduate Student Teaching Assistant in Seattle, WA

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Diversity of students in terms of race/ethnicity, academic levels e.g. undergraduate to graduate, socioeconomic status. It was a great experience to work with students in different courses and fantastic instructors that were always supportive of not just the students they teach but of the teaching assistants as well.

      Cons

A disadvantage is that working part-time (20hrs/week) as a graduate student does not translate as part-time because it mostly felt like a full-time job especially when it is a requirement to add 10 credits of course work to the already busy schedule.
