I worked at University of West London full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Nice pleasant location in Ealing.
    Good eateries and wine bars
(Very) Small bunch of staff that want to make a real difference.

    Cons

Too much finger pointing between departments.
A lot of senior deadwood still commanding high salaries but output severely limited.
    Neglect of issues facing students.

    Advice to Management

Directorate need to wake up and listen to and approach these issues head on. The enrolment for students in September is an embarrassment and a shambles. Detailed information is bkt provided to the students and the student records system is severely strained and does not work with other IT systems. Both the IT team and the Registry team are in denial and constantly finger pointing blame at each other. This does not bode well for prospective students wishing to come to UWL. More recently a senior VP resigned after just 9mths on the job! There seems to be a lot of dead-wood which needs shifting for this university to rise up their lowly scored rankings and become a proper uni.
Come on Peter John stop looking at your expensive and named buildings and take ownership of this !

I worked at University of West London full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A great campus for students and a rewarding experience helping many first generation university students reach their dreams.

    Cons

Allocation of work in my department needed greater thought to avoid burnout for some and the takers working on their own agenda.

    Advice to Management

Better leadership to use people's strengths and recognition to ensure a happier front line workforce, this would improve the student experience.

    Pros

Good rate of pay, good working hours, students lovely to work with, nice location

    Cons

Negative working environment, bad management at every level, heads of department do not really care about employees and students, a blame culture, no meritocracy, nepotism, staff not very qualified, especially for HE level.
Senior management is distant and biased, especially with non British workers.

    Advice to Management

Improve teaching standards, change strategy, get rid of most managers, hire more qualified staff

    Pros

Some amazing people, working really hard to try and support students. The students are also lovely to work with.

    Cons

A blame culture. No decisions can be made as managers all seem too afraid of being overruled by the Vice Chancellor to make up their own mind, and then you get blamed for not doing things that you weren't asked to do

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff and use their expertise, it will make the university a better place and also make staff enjoy their jobs more too.
