I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of autonomy, lots of money if you know the right people and do the right things.

    Cons

Bureaucracy and nepotism are tough to deal with. You need to be in the good graces of a good professor.

    Advice to Management

Run student dev teams with more oversight and formal controls.

I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working at UW-Madison is great, but is a very liberal atmosphere. Great if you like that, not great if you don't. It is a vibrant campus.

    Cons

UW is a state institution, lots of red tape.

    Advice to Management

Reach down to the worker bees. It is wonderful to have good leadership, but leaders need to lead.

I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Surrounded by smart people, beautiful location, lots of opportunities for professional development

    Cons

Policies on family leave are severely lacking. Will say a lot about how much they support you...but when it comes to leave, pto, flex time, etc you will have no official support and only the mercy of your manager to fall back on.

    Advice to Management

Add parental leave for all employees!
