I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison part-time

    Pros

    Great research.
    Great Advisors.
    Awesome city.
    Great lakes.

    Cons

Very low salary compared to other research universities.
Research future looks uncertain for Governor budget cut every other year.
    Bad winter

    Advice to Management

Make adjustment to Grad student salary. At least on par with other midwest universities like UIUC, Uni Of Minn, Mich etc. Students would easily drop Madison offer to go to those universities.

I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Easy, laid back, and cool people.

    Cons

Sometimes there is nothing to do and you get bored, and management gets mad that you aren't doing anything when there's nothing to do..

    Advice to Management

Let us chill when we get everything done

I worked at University of Wisconsin-Madison full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The working conditions as a TA are decent. Tuition remission is the best part of the deal. The students are generally bright and decently motivated. I enjoyed working with my fellow grad students.

    Cons

The general pay is not great. Madison is increasingly expensive, and the stipend is not really enough to live off very easily. You are always subject to the whims of faculty, who can be out of it and unreasonable. Public support for higher ed in Wisconsin seems to be going down the drain.

    I worked at University of Wisconsin-Madison full-time

    Pros

Academic setting. My work was project-based, so I didn't have set hours. I was expected to work between 35 - 45 hours any given week, but what mattered most was that I completed projects on time. This will be different with different bosses, however. Working on the cutting edge of research was highly satisfying.

    Cons

Low salary, benefits were cut when the state slashed $300 million from the university's budget.
