I worked at University of Wisconsin part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Amount of responsibility and opportunity given to students is unmatched by other student jobs. Great team dynamics, and lots of opportunity to develop entry-level professional skills

    Cons

Stressful work; understaffed nature leads to very difficult and intense periods of work. Some disconnect between HR and day-to-day operations, as staffing situation has only deteriorated. Team feels undervalued at times

    Advice to Management

Listen to your student employees - you would not be functioning without them. They want to rise to the challenge, but they need to feel that it will be noticed, rewarded, and helpful. Do not dismiss us as replaceable.

    Pros

Good benefits, relaxed work environment, stability.

    Cons

Minimal, if any, annual increases, archaic union rules, severe operating budget shortfalls, yet they building like there's no tomorrow.

    Advice to Management

Fix overall management structure, adequately fund operations to stop the mass departure of experienced, senior staff.

-my managers do not micromanage or hover, but are always available when I need them

I have been working at University of Wisconsin full-time

    Pros

Flexible work; focused on clientele and helping improve their lives and businesses; great people!

    Cons

Say "life-work balance" but not really much support to help achieve this; don't expect a private industry salary; state political climate against education is tough and creates uncertainties going forward
