I worked at Unum full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working for an insurance company definitely has its benefits... as in good benefits.

    Cons

Fairly steady stream of reorganizations and force ranking talent to a bell curve really kills morale, momentum, and innovation.

    Advice to Management

Sharp sticks and sweet carrots are an outdated method for managing an organization... especially an IT organization which requires creative problem solving. Ditch forced ranking and move forward with autonomy, mastery, and purpose at the center of your talent management strategy.

I have been working at Unum full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Unum takes care of its people. It's not uncommon to meet people that have been with Unum +25 years

    Cons

It's a big company, so naturally things can move a bit slower and with more procedures than a startup.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

    Pros

Friendly people, good benefits, low stress environment, well run, strong senior management team

    Cons

Large and fairly bureaucratic, not particularly innovative, not a great spot for young, highly motivated people looking to advance rapidly

    Advice to Management

Figure out how to foster, challenge, and grow early career and mid-level talent

    Pros

    Great training, good development programs

I worked at Unum full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very good benefit package, lot of tenure in departments other than sales.

    Cons

Outdated technology, sales office very segregated (sales vs admin) , inexperienced management, way too much favoritism and bias.

    Advice to Management

Update technology. Really be honest about the run away power sales managers have. Change sales interview process, too many decision makers.

    Pros

benefits, employees, team enviroment, continuous improvement culture

    Cons

Senior management is not a proponent of work at home/alternative works schedules as they should be. More opportunities to effectively utilize social media and technology to simplify work and be more effeicient, as well as keeping up with competition.
