I have been working at Unum full-time for less than a year

    Pros

They are doing a good job at getting younger talent into a historically aging industry. Benefits are solid (unsurprisingly to the nature of the business) and you will definitely achieve a work-life balance. Also, the offices are very nice, the opportunity for growth is fantastic, and the company is investing in its employees.

    Cons

Being an employee benefits company, it lacks excitement at times, and is rather slow moving. Definitely some smart people, but a little unsocial. 9-5 job.

    Advice to Management

Keep up with the development programs. Seek technical talent, but also try to create a more energetic culture.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Unum full-time for less than a year

    Pros

none-existent, get to travel, the beginning was nice, the end was hostile(Court Room).

    Cons

Worked like a mule paid with peanuts, and expected to do more than an intern should. Work-life balance is an empty promise. Hostile environment. Management is insane. Seen a number in the computer and replaceable. Morals and ethics are questionable. Don't trust them will not follow through, and for them hard-work never pays off. IT Mngt has no idea what code is, only know how to micro-manage at best.

    Advice to Management

figure it out as most are told.

    Pros

    Cons

Company boasts of work life balance but does little to make it possible

    Advice to Management

Hire less and more carefully. Work to retain the loyal hardworking employees you already have.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Unum full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great benefits. The culture they say they WANT is amazing and it can be found in pockets (IT is not one of those pockets). There are lots of jobs and opportunity (if you can compartmentalize the stress).

    Cons

IT can be a hostile environment (which definitely impacts work/life balance). The company has been in a constant state of constraint and outsourcing of IT and business jobs for 3-5 years. The CEO's support of the IT CIO/CDO is either oblivious or crudely tactical. Both are unfortunate. No coordination between leaders to achieve common and/or prioritized goals makes it impossible to be successful.

    Advice to Management

There is a problem in IT and it starts at the top. It seems like everyone knows it and it appears as though nothing is being done about it. If there is, it's taking too long. If everything is a priority, nothing is a priority. Coordinate strategies!
