    Pros

They really seem to care about taking care of their people. A lot of agencies say it but Upshot walks the walk. There is a reason they have a lot of people who have been there for a long time.

It is a good place for young people to get started because they can meet good people in the industry and have some fun.

They are willing to take some risk and they are trying to evolve as the industry is changing.

    Cons

They can be too quick to settle for mediocre work. Sometimes they pick stability over creativity and that can be hard for a team that is supposed to be creative.

There is no training or opportunities to improve what you do. You have to leave to get that.

    Advice to Management

Push the people who work there to go for better work. Sometimes you have to tell a client you are not okay with doing generic work.

    Pros

Almost all of the people who work here are great to work with, as people. Some of the teams here do good stuff, though, so it really depends on where you are.

    Cons

Most of the work is very mediocre, at best.
Perhaps more importantly, though, is that they just sold out to a venture capital firm. This drastically reduced every single benefit, without any positive payoff. The benefits used to make up for the lower-than-average salary, but now there is no payoff.
I'm sure this deal was good for the SVP level people (there are only 5 or 6 of them here) but it was at the cost of every single employee. They obviously didn't even consider anyone else in the deal. This selfishness has lead to a huge chunk of people leaving, and I don't see it stopping any time soon.

    Advice to Management

    You already made your choice.

    Pros

    Good people in the office.

    Cons

Lousy management team that was not really focused on the growth of the people.

    Advice to Management

Focus less on your own needs and focus on the needs of the entire company.

I have been working at Upshot Inc full-time

    Pros

Schbooze (agency parties. They can be pretty fun.), summer hours, good clients. Upshot upfront is nice (they inform everyone in the agency what is going on with client relationships, business being won and good work being created).

    Cons

Certain teams feel like high school with their cliques and hostility. Unless you are a senior level or higher, you don't have any say in what is being pitched or concepted. Some teams have great work life balance, but others have almost none. LITERALLY EVERYONE IS QUITTING. Business is being won, but moral is low and appreciation isn't really there. Plus with lower pay than some agencies, they can't keep people around.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Starting raising wages so you don't keep losing employees. Hire more people for teams that don't have any work life balance. Let lower levels help come up with ideas.

    Pros

Great healthcare packages, summer Fridays (you get out early), lenient holiday schedules, very fun and collaborative atmosphere, matching 401k, good culture, very transparent about what goes on, everyone is very friendly.

    Cons

Hours can be crazy, PTO is only ok, sometimes don't distribute work evenly

    Advice to Management

Sometimes I worry about stress management, I see some people working late every night or having to come in multiple times a weekend (have done both multiple times myself, but some teams work like that 24/7). Offer more stress relief activities or incentives/rewards for people who put the teams on their backs.

I have been working at Upshot Inc full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Summer Friday's. But rumor has it the agency is considering doing away with them.
Work/Life Balance is not bad. Since the shop doesn't expect innovative or out of the box thinking there is no need or expectation to stay late to do anything better or bigger.
There is a handful of talented people here, but with each passing day the talented ones find better jobs and are leaving.

    Cons

If Advertising has a clown car, this place is it. The shop lacks leadership across the board. From the CEO, to the heads of Creative and Account Management, there is a lack of vision.

There simply exists a desire to keep slogging away doing the same mediocre work the agency has always done. This most likely explains why people are leaving in droves.

There is no effort to guide or coach clients nor is there any desire to really do innovative or great work. Management promotes people that are unqualified and untalented. The agency's slogan should simply be "good enough is good enough".

As someone from another agency in the same building said, "they keep trying to put a new coat of paint on themselves to convince people they're doing things differently, but its the same place it always has been."

    Advice to Management

None. They obviously don't care about anything other than their paycheck and it shows.

    Pros

The people you meet here will stay with you for life and keep you happy even when the job is tough.

Great range of big-name clients, variety of mediums to work in, and solid upward mobility if you make the effort to get yourself known.

Summer hours, Flex Days, and a lot of three day weekends are nice to have.

    Cons

Salaries are less than average and at times you may feel like you're doing everything on every project.

Sometimes it feels like there's not enough people doing the work and too many people providing their feedback.

When heavy workload meets lame projects and you're reminded you are well below Chicago salary averages, it can be pretty infuriating, and even your awesome coworkers can't make that better.

    Advice to Management

Either pay more competitively or hire more "doers" instead of "reviewers." I still don't understand how one can feel underpaid and understaffed simultaneously.

    Pros

Company rooted in culture, but appeals to younger audience. There needs to be more then a monthly themed office drinking event to keep people happy.

    Cons

Poor compensation, no flexibility to work remotely, management allows for badly behaved, disrespectful client behaviors/actions.

    Advice to Management

Reward employees for hard work, dedication and get with the times to allow people to work remotely as needed.

    Pros

Great place to work. Fun culture, along with incredibly friendly and talented people. Office space is exciting and open, bosses are great to work for.

    Cons

Some work is tedious, but you'll find that anywhere. Also some people tend to get burned out with being overworked. And the new Wolf Point buildings are taking away the amazing views.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing by promoting a friendly, creative, open culture. Perhaps do a better job of assigning work/hiring enough people to keep a positive work/life balance.
