Pros

The value of this company was teaching me what it takes to make it in an environment like Utilant's. Let me explain. They hire on the cheap, most people don't know what they're doing, and the training is non-existent. But I was transitioning away from sales, so the very sour experience I had at Utilant was a great educator. I'm at a way better company, earning way more money, and it wouldn't be possible with the school of hard knocks which was Utilant. So I'm actually grateful. The non-management people were great. Free lunch and casual dress code were great. It was a great education in agile devops. Both in how to do it and how not to do it.

Cons

I'm not going to sit here an insult anyone or trash everything. The other reviews here tell the story. Most managers including those in the C-suite aren't good leaders, possibly aren't good people, lack people skills and emotional intelligence, and could really use some perspective - like a board of directors made of people who are actually experienced and successful in managing a software company. Shout out to the QA and Tech Support Manager - they were great. But overall, there's no accountability and they need some. Going to need to spend some money on some talent, and beef up the workforce; not enough labor to meet commitments. That hurts everyone from the devs, the account managers and especially the customers. They recently got some outside investment, so maybe this will be the catalyst to really change things.

Pros

Utilant is a cool place to work because of the people there. Most people you will interact with on a day-to-day basis are enjoyable to work with, and a lot of the "culture" stuff is really cool. Pay was nice and comparable to other Buffalo-area companies. Benefits seemed competitive. CEO was cool and down-to-earth.

Cons

In my division, senior directors / management had absolutely no clue what their employees did all day. Being a "solution architect" actually meant I was spending most of my time duct-taping solutions and doing grunt work rather than actually architecting anything for clients because they've hired far too many project managers and not enough people to actually implement things for clients. *Super* high turnover in my division, which is blamed on the people being "the wrong fit" for the job and not the shortcomings of management.

More Wild West Than West Coast

Pros

I worked with some very fine people there; unfortunately, they were the minority.

Cons

It takes more than exposed duct work and some mediocre beer to create a west coast style software company. The culture at Utilant is appalling. Bad behavior and open hostility are tolerated and commonplace at all levels, starting at the very top. There is a total lack of personal accountability; whenever things go wrong blame is simply shifted to whoever isn’t in the room at the moment, and 99 times out of 100 no one present has the spine or the decency to object to this cowardly practice. Meanwhile progress grinds to a halt, clients get angry, and hard-working staff spin their wheels and become disillusioned while the do-nothings rely on the buddy system to get by. Morale is terrible in most departments and turnover is through the roof. And no, it’s certainly not because Utilant does such a good job of training newbies that they get recruited away by other companies. That’s a creative, albeit laughable, delusion perpetuated by a management team grasping at straws to explain the almost weekly departures. At the top, there is a fundamental lack of understanding or respect for established industry best practices, and a glaring absence of actual leadership. Decisions and direction are ego-driven and lack the sound judgment that comes from experience, of which there is cumulatively very little. There is a widespread failure to learn from past mistakes, and both clients and employees suffer for it. As this company continues to grow rapidly beyond its capability to deliver, things will get worse until eventually it all comes to a head in some unpleasant way. Until then, give this sideshow a wide berth as you pass it by.
