I worked at V.G.'s Food part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Easy job, employers used to working with young people, some opportunities for advancement, scheduling system was easy to used

    Cons

Poor pay for minors, availability not always honored, requested number of hours not always honored, sometimes hazardous/unpleasant work

    Advice to Management

Respect young people more and do not assume they are all deadbeats. Do not ask higher performing employees to compensate for slack left by less motivated employees.

    Pros

Worked with awesome people. Loved our customers.

    Cons

Had to boost our own moral. No one is held accountable. Upper management does not seem to care much about the employees, except for bottom line. Pockets for them must get fuller. Cut back on staff, work harder. NO OVERTIME!

    Advice to Management

Management is wonderful. Can only do what they can do. They try to keep a neutral level balancing no hours to work with and keeping the store staffed. Very hard to do.

    Pros

The benefits package for even part-time workers that was left behind by the old ownership is nice, even part-time workers get paid vacation and sick days. However, under the new ownership of Spartan stores most perks are being stripped.

    Cons

They have little to no respect for their employees. Being spoken to condescendingly is the norm. Constructive feedback isn't something management specializes in. There isn't any effort put into solving employee problems. It's more of a place where people burn out quickly and quit to find a new job rather than doing anything to change the dysfunctional model of management. But all the while putting on an air that VG's is your friendly family grocery store :D

    Advice to Management

If you don't know the right people or kiss the right butts, be prepared to go nowhere in the company and get no hours. Nothing is based on seniority or hard work but all about favoritism.
