Current Employee - Spouse of Career Vet At VCA in Albuquerque, NM

I have been working at VCA full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good quality medicine, experienced and capable staff

    Cons

There is no vacation benefit for vets at this clinic. Me off, even for professional conferences , etc., is possible if you get another vet to cover your appointments when away. Consequently you end up paying the other doc back when he/she want time off. Not a healthy situation for typically overworked veterinarian.

    Advice to Management

Give some reasonable paid vacation. Overall work would improve, not to mention health of employees.

I worked at VCA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The other employees I worked with were amazing, very close family. The discounts are out of this world awesome if you are a full time employee. Also would get free samples from companies such as pet food, heartworm and flea preventions as well as various vac merch.

    Cons

The management is horrible. The team leaders fought all the time in front of employees and sometimes in ear shot of clients. They changed their polices on how they wanted things done all the time and you would be reprimanded at the smallest of things like not capitolizing a letter. I'm not joking. Since I was let go from my job the employees who I worked with and thought I was friends with now avoid me like the plague. I have a feeling that management said some less than favorable things about why I left. Being there for 5+ years leaves you with nothing and trying to find another job in a different field other than veterinary is extremely hard because employers think that all you did was play with animals all day. But that's not the case. I regret working there but I also grew from it so I guess there's something that came out from that. With as much money that the hospital made our compensation was atrocious. We would have several clients that came in and drop a thousand dollars or more and that would be more than I made in a month. Was there over 5 years and never made a dollar more per hour than what I did when I started. Don't get excited when the yearly reviews and raises come around.

    Advice to Management

Grow up and trust your employees.

I have been working at VCA full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Relaxed, job security, 401k, vacation time, insurance, veterinary discounts, ability to bring my pet to work, free CE, flexible scheduling

    Cons

Upper management has limited exposure to hospitals and day to day operations.
Hiring and making fancy jobs/titles for people that add little to the growth of hospitals (ie. Director of hospital development or local marketing manager). Why not invest those salaries back into the support staff and let the medical directors and hospital managers grow the hospitals?
(See above) Limited payroll budgeting makes it difficult to hire experienced staff or pay them appropriately.
Little room for advancement or raises. If you were hired at a low wage, don't expect to get a hefty raise or bonus.
HR makes it impossible to get rid of anyone regardless of performance or wrong-doings.
Requiring hospitals to focus on sales goals for multiple products and services.

    Advice to Management

Take better care of your support staff and people that actually work in the hospitals and make "you" the money vs taking BETTER care of upper management.
Try not to focus on multiple sales goals at a time.

    Pros

I did get a lot of opportunities to do different work and get trained to do different tasks even though I was kennel.

    Cons
