Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

    VCE: Very Cowardly Executives

    Aug 13, 2014 - Not Originally From EMC So I Don't Exist

    Pros

Pros? Well I suppose that working here is better than being unemployed because the pay and fringe benefits are darn good.

    Cons

Most of the gushing reviews over the past several months seem to be coming from the field. All I can say is, 'Good for you.' I promise you that the picture isn't so rosy elsewhere, especially in the Engineering ranks. VCE's leadership team suffers from the biggest credibility deficit of any place I’ve ever worked and actually seems to be getting worse. At this point I thought they would have figured it out from the past four years of trial and error, but instead they seem to have doubled-down on idiocy this year. Switching directions is to be expected every once and awhile at any company. Here unfortunately that behavior is a daily occurrence. Plan. Re-plan. Plan. Re-Plan. Scrap everything you have been working on for the past 3 months and start over from scratch on the same project with a different set of deliverables. Why? Cowardice. Cowardice is the hallmark of the executive ranks at VCE at all levels and particularly of Engineering. Nice folks, but cowards that are unable to stand firm for fear of upsetting one of their current or former EMC peers. Instead, they re-write history so the promise they made to their teams, the process they put in place, or the product decision they made was only a casual hint, or suggestion. All of which exacts a heavy toll on those that put their trust in them to LEAD. And in that cowardice they sacrifice any possibility of credibility, respect or sustaining a viable company long term. Bad management is nothing new and you learn to deal with it wherever you are. Here at VCE however the failure of LEADERSHIP is pervasive, extensive and unquestionably accepted as the norm. I’ve exhausted all avenues trying to professionally perform my job duties and get virtually no support from the cowards that should be providing us with cover. Instead we get push back from them. I feel zero job satisfaction for actually accomplishing something, because I never actually finish what I've started. If and when we do eventually deliver something, it is nothing the team and I feel proud of having participated in. There is no feeling of accomplishment, no celebration, not even a high-five. Just a general feeling of 'Good riddance.' The money is not worth it any longer. I’ve finally given up and I've started looking elsewhere. Thank you Glassdoor! VCE was a great idea with outstanding potential that was doomed at launch like the space shuttle Columbia which disintegrated over Texas, the result of similar cowardly leadership at NASA. Somewhere in all of that is a parable. No doubt in a future slide deck one of the cowards will be bragging about how awesome they are to have hired my backfill, which undoubtedly will be someone they worked with at EMC, whether qualified, or not.

Old Boy Net More Important Than Management Competency and Ethics

    Jul 24, 2012 - Anonymous Employee

    Business Outlook

    Pros

-Great concept and value proposition for the customer -A highly dedicated workforce supporting that value proposition -Decent benefits package

    Cons

By far the most managerially dysfunctional company I've ever worked for in an extensive high-tech career. -If you didn't come from EMC your opinion, input and value to the company is marginalized or apparently rejected out of hand. -Yes-men are highly valued. Report a program as 'Green' even if it is Red. - If you don't work in the same location as your VP or Director it is unlikely that you will be included in any decision making that directly impacts what you are accountable for delivering.' -Within the leadership team the 'End-Run', failure to honor commitments and in some cases blatant, documented deception is commonplace. There are no ramifications for this behavior. If anything it seems to be the contrary. -Management strongly preaches the need for adhering to process, but will not apply it to themselves; Hallway discussions between two cronies changes strategic direction, negating months of effort, planning and deliverable of cross functional teams on a regular basis.

    Great Company overall....just needs direction

Sep 26, 2012 - Manager in Richardson, TX

    Pros

Solid company, great potential in market share and growth, definitely on the up and up with technology and where the market is going in regard to converged infrastructure. Benefits great, culture exciting and go-getter types.

    Cons

Sales Teams are worshipped since they 'drive revenue' though they are lazy and typically do not work smart at all. The expectation that everyone will bend to pursuit teams requests. Majority of leadership has no backbone and does whatever it takes to make $ rather than develop best practices. There are about 100 too many leaders....seems as though the company grew too fast and gave everyone and their dog a ridiculous title....each title then comes with its own sense of entitlement. I would say half the company is truly smart and half the company jumped ship from previous employers because they thought they were smarter than the rest....hence the reason VCE acquired so many chiefs each wanting to build thier own empire. Some day this company will have to grow up and make adult decisions, but for now they are stuck in infancy.

    Pros

Top notch technology, pay, benefits and lots of opportunity for growth. This is the most dynamic place I have worked and the most rewarding.

    Cons

Likely the hardest job ever. Due to velocity it has rough spots but leadership is genuinely listening and trying to make it better.

    Pros

+ VCE is experiencing healthy growth into an increasingly consolidated server market. + VCE provides access to excellent medical coverage. + Management supports technical growth. + Tuition Reimbursement available. + Leadership is very interested in making sure company is heading in the right direction. + Management is interested in your personal growth.

    Cons

    - There's growing pains as procedures change and metrics are ramped up to make people more accountable. - It takes a lot of time to get new guys up to speed, so some quarters are way too busy. - In customer support, so working holidays and weekends and oddball schedules make work life balance tough at times.
