I have been working at VCU Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Their health insurance is well nigh invincible.

    Cons

Shortstaffing sucks no matter where you are.

    Advice to Management

    Hire more CNAs.

I have been working at VCU Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

All the coworkers I've had are friendly and helpful. Most units have a strong team spirit. Patient ratios are manageable, and you are usually given the lightest possible load when made to float, which isn't too often. There are great benefits (although they are for full time employees only), lots of training opportunities for new grads, plus education reimbursement if you or your family decides to go to college at VCU.

    Cons

PARKING. 50-100 bucks a month if you are even approved, cheaper to walk/bike/carpool. Salary is tiered and non-negotiable. Inner city hospital with sometimes less than pleasant patient population. As a teaching hospital, working with residents can be frustrating at times. Janitorial services and meal tray workers slack on the job and leave work for CNAs and RNs.

    Advice to Management

    Great job with positive reinforcement.

I have been working at VCU Medical Center full-time

    Pros

Good and affordable health care benefits

    Cons

Employees have to pay high monthly prices to park FAR and have to take the bus from the parking lot and back after long shifts. Low pay, unprofessional environment, and not worth your happiness. The culture of this company should be realigned. Management gossips about personal things going on with employees. Leaving soon

    Advice to Management

Stop ignoring your team's needs and give people the pay they deserve.

I have been working at VCU Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

continuing education assistance, good management on certain floors, good environment to work for new grads looking to learn new things

    Cons

doctors are not the brightest, low pay, not enough diversity, parking is ridiculous, hospital is not well built, semi private rooms are messy, the whole hospital needs a makeover, no option to opt out of some benefits (not a good place for single new grads to earn decent pay)

    Advice to Management

Management is awesome. I wouldn't change anything about what they are doing

I worked at VCU Medical Center part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

VCU is a Level 1 Trauma center that has a fair deal of highly acute patients. The medical Center is renown for many specialties including transplant, cardiology, pediatrics etc. Overall it is a great teaching hospital and has a collaborative work environment. Great Benefits. Health care, SDL, LDL, insurance, vacation etc.

    Cons

Employees are charged for monthly parking which takes a dent out of the pay check. While the benefits are excellent, they tend to low ball the nurses with starting base salaries. IN addition, VCU has a clinical ladder system which makes it challenging to move up the ladder and receive a raise.
