    Pros

Best Job Ever, Best Job Ever, Best Job Ever, Best Job Ever, really enjoy my job and being part of the IDT. Enjoy going to peoples homes and providing service to patients and their families.

    Cons

Lots of paperwork, and sometimes lots of driving, but overall it is a good opportunity and a great place to work.

    Advice to Management

    Continue the good work.

I worked at VITAS Healthcare full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I worked for Vitas for 6 years..The Continuous care staff is amazing. The nurses and caregivers are about the best I have seen or ever worked with. They are selfless, warm and loving. And most feel that this is the most sacred time of anyone's life and we are privileged to be a part of it. The medical director Dr R was loving,a great educator and really good at teaching staff, patients and families about the dying process.

The business director Marty is the most helpful to all. He helps all of us to be well informed and in sync with each other.

My father died in Jan and he was in an area where Vitas was not. The care he received was substandard at best and it really hurt my heart that he could not have received the benefit that all my other patients and families had received under the care of Vitas and there staff.

I know there are always times when things do not go the way we plan for a patient. But this company really tries to do its best. And will always resolve any issues in a timely manner. I would recommend this Hospice to all of my friends and family. I have seen the other hospice providers and Vitas is the best.

    Cons

Overnight shifts only for LPNs 13 hours.
Some staff in the office are rude and condescending to field satff and each other.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate each other and remember why you got into hospice.I hope that helping people was your number 1 reason.

I have been working at VITAS Healthcare full-time

    Pros

HUGE level of resources, LOTS of charity work (despite being a for-profit company), GREAT pay.

    Cons

Lack of dedication and poor morale from a FEW employees permeates the entire office. There is a general willingness to do only what's required by some, but it affects everyone in this type of business.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to transform the sales culture into a pharmaceutical model. We all left pharma because of that type of restrictive environment. Not productive or enjoyable.

I worked at VITAS Healthcare full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Rewarding work, autonomy, cohesive field staff

    Cons

Most team managers are poor at managing staff and have no idea what non-nursing clinical staff does creating a disconnect, management does not seem interested in career goals of employees or retention. Poorly thought out geographical territories with long travel times (often 50 minute drives), unrealistic mileage pay for wear and tear on personal automobiles, too much on- call time with poor compensation burning out employees, management shows deaf ear to hardships caused by route changes, no holiday pay, no pool staff for non-nursing field employees, overworked nursing staff, poor pay for HHA staff. Paltry raises, lousy benefit co-pays.

    Advice to Management

Consider consequences to staff besides cost benefits when reassigning territories. You put time and money into training staff, offer incentives to keep them if you value them as you say. Claims that "our staff is the greatest" don't match actions. Give non-nursing staff a break from constantly racing for on-call and absentee coverage & hire a few pro tem staff for cover.
