    Pros

Decent pay, great coworkers; SW,HHAs, Chaplains, and docs. Direct or care

    Cons

High caseload, very poor training, and upper management is not reliable or organized.

    Advice to Management

Respect your employees and give training that is asked for and needed.
Follow through with action. Not just repeated talking about solving a problem.

I worked at VITAS Healthcare full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great clinical staff, varied work environment. Good colleagues who supported each other. In this type of work, you are privileged to meet some amazing people who have lived remarkable lives.

    Cons

Unnecessary levels of stress-inducing micromanagement from upper management. The very high turnover rate is due in part to the field and administrative staff being bugged about "productivity numbers", with not enough support to meet those goals consistently. This is hospice care, but at times it felt like an assembly line. Not all of this is the fault of Vitas. The Medicare oversight and regulatory environment contributes to the stress by the way care is measured and reimbursed. Not everything can be reduced to a metric.

    Advice to Management

Push back against CMS-broaden the definition of care planning, and for the love of God, give back the electronic charting to the field staff! This is 2017-you shouldn't be doing paperwork!

    Pros

VITAS has an amazing sales training and support team, the staff in San Antonio is top notch and works really well together. You also really have the ability to make your own success here. I enjoy working in a compassionate and sensitive environment, yet I am able to use my skills and only continue to better them day in and day out.

You don't have to be an expert in healthcare to get an interview or job here, but VITAS will assist in developing you into an expert.

Ability to make a difference in people's lives everyday.

    Cons

The health insurance and 401k are not good at all. It would be nice to not have a high deductible plan. The 401k is a 25% match, which is the lowest I've heard of anywhere and to be completely vested it takes 4 years.

No paid holidays- you have to use your PTO even for Christmas and Thanksgiving. 22 days PTO depending on your position and time starting with the company. Other companies have 9 or so paid holidays +, 18 + PTO days , but once you begin working here you will understand that in hospice it is difficult to really take days off and to be good at your job you need to be available most of the time.

    Advice to Management

More corporate employee recognition for admissions and operations teams, as well as HHA aides. Work with SigmaCare for reps to be able to utilize a computer version of the program to input calls.

    Pros

    Vacation and Pto are reasonable.

    Cons

Upper Management talks a good game, but do they really know what's going on in all territories. They have the stupidest people in Managent there. They have no idea what is going on and they don't care to know what is going on. All territories are not the same and they should be aware of this and try to help reps not belittle them.

    Advice to Management

Know that all reps are working hard even the ones who may not be producing. They may be working even harder. Encourage don't cut down anyone. Instead of replacing reps constantly in territories and wasting the companies money. See what all the reps are doing. Go on a ride a long with all reps. No one is perfect including you.

I worked at VITAS Healthcare full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

caring co-workers, decent PTO, fulfilling work

    Cons

low morale, high turnover, RNs and CNAs are incredibly stressed and overworked

    Advice to Management

Honestly, when you make a big business out of end of life services, there's no winning. Nurses, chaplains, social workers and CNAs are held to ridiculous quotas, though when those quotas are not met, there are rarely repercussions. That's probably because turnover is so high, they can rarely afford lose anyone by firing them. Also, I know for a fact that CNAs on my former team hadn't gotten raises in YEARS. They make so little money already and work harder than almost anyone, and get no recognition.

This is hard, emotionally draining work. Show your employees that you appreciate them.
