I worked at VMware (More than a year)

    Pros

    Exposure to many technical disciplines
Knowledge cross-pollenation is pervasive and helpful
    Trial-by-fire approach forces skill development

    Cons

Way too much focus on handling inbound issues, and not actually solving them
Unequal workload distribution and rampant favoritism
Many promises of advancement opportunities, in reality vapor and manipulation
Way too much dobulespeak on "culture" values, while grinding people down, disallowing remote work potential, nothing but a sweatshop call center.

    Advice to Management

Get with the times. Stop being so monolithic. Get managers who actually know something about management, instead of technicians who are just trying to get off the front lines. Stop being so self-serving, while crowing about how great you are.

I worked at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are great, the culture is OK. There are many perks, from free snacks to good work environments. The technology is amazing, company has an impeccable name within the enterprise space. Benefits are good.

    Cons

Very siloed work environment that grew too big, too fast. Internal IT won't lift a finger to help the company grow to the size it needs.

    Advice to Management

Stick with what's working, go back to the basics and don't spread yourself too thin.

I have been working at VMware (More than a year)

    Pros

Culture and people are how companies should be. They reward you with your hard work and enable you to be creative.

    Cons

Not all processes are in place so sometimes you have to just make up your own way to get things delivered.

    Advice to Management

More effective training where knowledge of products reinforced routinely. More sharing and collaboration in areas that duplicate work.

I worked at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The technology you are exposed to and experience gained make up for most negatives. The company also works very hard to accommodate any special working requirements.

    Cons

some expectations and performance benchmarks are not possible or useless (telling customers to take a survey and begging for good ratings does not make better employees.)

I worked at VMware full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

VMware is a firm with great people and products, with a superior working environment and fantastic benefits. They are growing fast and still extremely profitable with only a few significant business challenges in the near-term.

    Cons

No real cons at all. Perhaps they are diluting their talent pool a bit with over-zealous hiring.

    Advice to Management

For mid to long-term, VMware needs to figure out where VMware goes in the SaaS/PaaS/IaaS world beyond selling "box software" to enterprises consolidating spare cpu cycles. Streamline and simplify the management and monitoring of VMware environments.

    Pros

    -excellent training and on-boarding
-flat management structure in support services
    -very collaborative environment
    -excellent feedback of employee value
-strong emphasis on satisfying customers with tools provided to do so

    Cons

-rewards (financial, benefits, etc) for good performance have been missing for some time (possibly on the horizon)
    -limited senior resources
-limited personnel resources to deal with current call volume

    Advice to Management

-look carefully at plans to account for immediate crisis before implementing them - short-term solutions are digging into the rank and file and seem to be increasing turnover when we most need to hold on to senior resources. bring in more support engineers to account for both turnover and increasing call volume as sales grow.

    Pros

Company has innovative technology with a tenancity to win. Most everyone we meet wants to hear about the technology and how they can deploy it. It's fun to represent the company with it's amazing growth.

    Cons

Tons of movement within the company means that it's difficult to know who is who since it's so dynamic.

    Advice to Management

The support renewal process is broken and needs to be fixed. Easily 75% of the complaints I field are focused on renewals. With such a visible process it should be fixed.
