I worked at VMware (Less than a year)
[This experience is from 2012. Things may have changed since then].
Modern offices, lots of free food and parking.
A great mix of international people.
No atmosphere - employees sit in silence.
Potential for a bully culture - for example:
One of the employees shouted at and tried to humiliate me in front of the whole office. The same employee also raised her voice to a permanent member of staff.
Advice to Management
Monitor email systems for abuse by staff.
Establish a zero tolerance bully culture.
Encourage employees to talk and socialise.
Make sure temps are supported and not bullied by other employees.
I worked at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)
Some great products which sell themselves well. I met some great talent in the business who if managed correctly would be even more productive.
There are some positives I found like limited micro management but this I believe also comes down to who your manager is.
You can make some good money but this is now reducing year on year.
If you are in the US it feels like a very different business. You can move around much more.
I liked the US leadership and they do demonstrate some great qualities but these do not make it through to EMEA.
The core management in the UK have been with the company far too long. You are told you need to be able to deal with change..the only thing that does not change is the management. With this comes little upward mobility unless you are in the "club". If you are not in the "club" your options rapidly become very limited very quickly. However you are made every year to work on a personal development plan...not sure why as there is not no place to go and the only promotions I witnessed tended to be managers being promoted with the odd sales person being promoted only in title i.e. Major or senior.
Much of your time will be spent dealing with some unbelievably crazy internal processes which are often manual and for a cloud leader somewhat unbelievable that they exist given the tools on the market today. Your internal admin skills will be welcomed here and I worked with some very good internal admin people...erm I mean sales people, Targets are set every 6 months if your in sales so if you are working on that OTE big deal the likelihood is that your target will be adjusted to accommodate this therefore making hitting you number even more unrealistic.
Accounts will be moved up and down and away from you so again be prepared to be irritated here and thats before the US asks for any splits.
If you are going for an interview ask about attrition rates in the Enterprise Team and have them demonstrate exactly how many people actually make their quota annually...its not a high %. You will also find the hiring and interviewing process long and tedious especially when compared with their competitors.
Advice to Management
Stop making employees fill out personal development plans when there is little or no place to be promoted to.
Remove the old boys club and let new blood in preferable not externally sourced new blood.
Remove the 6 month quota and let sales have a fair crack of the whip to hit their numbers. Sales people who earn and make their number tend to be happier and stay loyal.
