I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great to be working in a forward looking company full of smart and driven people. Great flexibility with work-at-home policy. Good benefits. Recently upgraded their parental leave for all parents (father, mother and adoption). A number of learning and development programs up for grabs to those looking to grow.

    Cons

Work-at-home also means less interpersonal interaction. A recent change to the annual performance review process does not feel as transparent anymore.

    Advice to Management

Keep investing in your employees. Provide/return to a more transparent performance review process.

I worked at VMware full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

None that I can think of the pros are washed away by the cons. I was very disappointed in this company and it's management. The guys who are "in" get to move up while the others suffer.

    Cons

Micro managing at its best. The sales directors are the worst. Upper management is out of touch with field reps.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the folks on ground doing the actual work not the managers who are just micro managing every since minute of what the reps are doing. This company has falling down the drain and there is no hope in sight.

I worked at VMware (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A company that truly cares about it's world.

A beautiful corporate campus and awesome caring people.

Technology that leads the way, and truly has transformed computing and IT.

    Cons

The reality of the field, a far different place than the corporate culture.

Cut-throat, vicious management who constantly play games with employees.

Clueless management whose goals are diametrically opposed to the parent culture.

Professional services that is clueless and refuses to truly grasp acquired technologies.

Acquired products surrounded by a vicious "Not Invented Here" attitude.

"Suites" of products that are released before they are able to actually perform the promised integrations.

    Advice to Management

Corporate needs to stamp out the vicious cowboy world on the East Coast.

Not Invented Here needs to be slashed.

The technology bigotry against WIndows is counter-productive and ruins good products.

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great access to technology and chance to work with some very smart people. Good Compensation. Company is always so good exposure to ecosystem and like-minded products.

    Cons

Internal processes are not mature at all due to rapid growth. Not enough collaboration yet between internal (business units, development) and client-facing roles (consultants, sales engineers). Employee enablement for growth is very sparse. Middle management not effective. Depending on the group you work for, can be very cliquey.

    Advice to Management

Need to clarify personal / career growth tracks @ VMware. Knowing the "what" is ok, however need to expand on the "how to get there". Especially there are some very mixed messages on PSO side (enablement is supported, however keep utilization high. Register for classes, however more often than not enrollment is dropped at last moment).

I worked at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Reasonable amount of autonomy, Good salary and work environment, Some very smart co-workers (and some not so smart).

    Cons

While I was there there was an immense hiring boom and money was thrown around recklessly. Unfortunately, part of them fixing this problem was laying off 900 people. I didn't get the feeling that the upper management did what it took to get strategy messages to the people doing the work. All the managing that was done was bottom to top.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to the lower-level employees who actually do the work.

I worked at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

VMware is a firm with Good benefits and they do pay very well for a software company. The technology is still very relevant and very much in demand

    Cons

Challenging environment to work .. You need to be not only competent in your role but also be aware of the political landscape to get ahead..

    Advice to Management

Go back to your roots of people first
