I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

VMware has a relatively high base salary plus some other perks, but over the years the RSU is shrinking to almost nothing.

    Cons

Bad management level, many managers don't even understand the project his group is doing. Most of the time, they just attend meetings, inquire engineers about some very basic concepts, pass messages and push people to fix bugs, meet deadlines and ask for more resources, that is it. No product vision, don't know how to allocate people and resources to get the job done. They only care about their promotions or keep the job, not the engineers.

In VMware, if one is not technical, doesn't know programming, doesn't know how to manage people, but knows how to play politics. He must be a manager.

    Advice to Management

Purge, purge, and purge, layoff 30~40% managers. they are not qualified for the job.

I have been working at VMware as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Tons of autonomy & flexibility
    - Work from home whenever you see fit
    - Comp is nice
    - Great products
    - Smart & helpful mentors & colleagues

    Cons

    - Needs to continue re-inventing their firm image, VMware is not just a hypervisor company anymore but it seen as so (or as a I-have-no-idea-wtf-this-company-does firm)

I worked at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

VMware is an Industry leader in virtualization. They have a beautiful campus and generally good, smart people.

    Cons

On many occasions, middle managers are not acting on the best interest of the company, but rather working to increase their own influence and fiefdom at the expense of others. Job titles like "Director" are achieved as a way to increase one's salary, with some of these so-called directors directing little else than their own work, whereas some have 2 or 3 direct reports in total.

    Advice to Management

Don't promote people as a means for justifying and positioning for one's own promotion. Bring in outside talent to help put better hiring and management training processes in place.
