    Pros

A good place to work because of the outstanding growth opportunities within the company. Also it has a lot of technical depth and the people are driven to complete the job.

    Cons

The job can be very tiring and demanding due to the large amount of work and deadlines. There is a difficult work life balance because you are always choosing one or the other.

    Advice to Management

One of the main concerns of employees is the time off. Senior management is currently trying to work w/ employees to give more time off and vacations.

    Pros

Successful company to work for that is on the way up. It is always fun to work for a company were success within company is limited by skills or abilities that I can perform.

    Cons

I am very happy with this job at this company, and as a result I can't really give any cons.

    Advice to Management

Very impressed even after 5 years. They are always looking forward given the many challenges.

    Pros

Very open culture (e.g. all employees receive reports of sales made), passionate and brilliant co-workers (many PhD holders who could have retired by now still come to work every day because they love their work), visionary CEO (always speaks her mind and isn't afraid to execute risky but promising ideas), interesting work (for software developers, anyway), healthy snacks (daily organic fresh fruit, nuts, yogurt, etc.), flexible work hours (just like most other hi-tech shops), environmentally sound policies (the entire headquarters was architected from scratch to be a green building), excellent products (our customers love us and we keep winning awards), good tools (for engineering, anyway), membership in the Stanford community (access to lectures, etc.).

    Cons

Almost nobody understands what we do. Also, if you want to live in a big city, commuting to Palo Alto can be frustrating.

    Advice to Management

Make our public-facing website stop sucking.

  5. "VMware is a fun place to be; it's aggressively growing, and it strives to provide a comfortable work environment"

    Pros

VMware is a fun place to be during the day. The company is growing, and their technology has lots of room to grow and improve. The employees are diverse in age and culture; and everyone is friendly. This is helpful as many of us are new to the Bay Area. Everyone in the company is smart, works hard, and pulls their weight. There's a culture of collaboration; and a degree of freedom in selecting one's work. VMware provides a great set of on-site perks: free soda & other healthy beverages, on-site expresso machines, plenty of healthy snacks, pinball machines, a friday "beer bash", and plenty of games like pool, ping-pong, and foosball tables.

    Cons

Although virtualization is an interesting and exciting field; some of the periphery work can be burdensome. Because the stock is volatile; recent hires will become very wealthy before other employees who have stock options that are severely underwater. Some employees underestimate the tangible advantages of competitors' products; like Parallels and Microsoft HyperV. Occasionally, perks are changed without employee involvement; to the chargin of those who chose VMware for a specific perk. A weakness is that VMware's products built by Unix people are difficult for Windows/Mac-centric users; and products built by Windows people are difficult for Unix/Mac-centric users. The cubicle areas can be noisy.

    Advice to Management

Give some kind of a stock grant to employees who's stock is severely underwater. Encourage management to discuss potential career paths with employees. Openly discuss competitors' products' advantages. Be careful with the "cloud computing" buzzword; the concept is highly ambiguous and is sometimes discussed in a tongue-in-cheek manner. Aggressively push to have 3rd-party VMware hosting solutions; much like how Amazon will host Xen VMs at a reasonable cost. Don't take VMware's market penetration for granted; ESX is very difficult to use and Amazon EC2 makes cloud computing available to anyone with simple technical skills.

    Pros

Great culture- open, forthright, very smart people, but not egotistical. Culture that deals with issues openly and tries for open and honest communication. VMware is filled with people who are both hard working and laid back. People are incredibly supportive of personal lives, yet understand that it is all-hands-on-deck to be able to stay in front of the competition. Fabulous, bleeding edge products that speak for themselves and have proven themselves in the marketplace.

    Cons

Grown very fast, and sometimes inefficient. The operational pieces are constantly playing catch up with the growth in terms of HR, IT and operations. Still, they are constantly looking for ways to improve and catch up, so it's not as much of a problem as if they were not dealing with it. We are catching up with ourselves on this, and VMware is very proactive about fixing issues.

Sometimes VMW over hires for positions and then people feel like they aren't growing as quickly as they would in other places.

The maternity/paternity/disability leave policies are very light...surprising for a company who values its people so much.

    Advice to Management

    Be decisive.

    Pros

I've been with the company a couple of years now. Market maker, leader and innovator. Fantastic people and the best is yet to come! If you want to be blaze new trails this is the place to be. Incredibly bright and talented leadership, while it's getting big very easy to access management to the highest level. More opportunities across the county and world. Training and communications are a high priority with the company. Company is also very flexible in allowing employees a quality of life. Produce and contribute and you will be rewarded. The best company I worked for in the past 25 years.

    Cons

None that I can think of....

    Advice to Management

Keep up the communications, especially with the remote employees

    Pros

VMware is the market leader in the emerging space of x86 virtualization. We're a growing, Engineering focused company with products lines that run from the Enterprise to the Desktop to Consumer markets. If you're interested in having a big impact at a company working on truly disruptive technology, VMware's one of the few companies out there for you.

    Cons

Our support for remote workers could be better. If you're not working out of the Palo Alto or San Francisco offices, you may experience some random pain from time to time (for example, the link to the primary RCS servers running in Palo Alto might randomly not be as speedy as you'd like all the time).

    Advice to Management

Continue to improve on articulating the vision for the future of the company all the way down the Engineering chain. Invest more in establishing a VMware branch and corporate identity beyond our core market segment.

    Pros

You're working with some of the best and brightest people in the industry, solving challenging technical problems. The company is driven by engineering, not by marketing and sales, and most of the senior management have strong technical backgrounds. Which means they understand the technical challenges you're running into, and can work with you to try and solve them.

All of VMware's employees are treated really well, all the perks you could ask for. They've done a great job keeping the startup feel as they've grown.

    Cons

The organization and processes are still very Palo Alto-centric, even though a large amount of the development work is being done outside of the home office.

    Advice to Management

    Thanks for the IPO.

    Pros

Great company, great product, great people. VMware is a technical leader in Virtualization, and my coworkers are the best and brightest I've had the privilege to work with.

    Cons

VMware doesn't do a good job of hiring from within. In most cases rather than promoting a current employee to a new management position, they will look outside the organization.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within, and continue to encourage people to thing openly.

    Pros

VMware is the only place selling innovative system software, and making real money at it. While you can do systems work at other companies, those companies are selling either hardware or support, and the fact that your contribution as a software engineer doesn't drive the business will undermine the importance to your management of the work you do.

    Cons

VMware has grown very, very fast over the last couple of years. There are a lot of new employees to enculturate, and a real risk that our culture of excellence will get diluted.

    Advice to Management

We need to invest a bit more in internal infrastructure (fast builds, source code control systems, review processes, etc.) relative to headcount. We're not scaling our engineers' productivity quickly enough.
