I worked at VMware full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great company working on industry relevant technology. Great opportunities to move around and work in many different groups.

    Cons

Tough to innovate new ideas when working remote for a large company.

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The ability to scam your way to revenue credit by getting access to purchase credits meant for others

    Cons

Shady business practices. Too many lines of business without any method / process / benefit to work together. No work / life balance. No support from lines of practice management.

    Advice to Management

Figure out how to blend the sales organizations so that they will find ways to work together vs acting like separate companies. If I wanted that type of atmosphere I would have stayed at Oracle.

I have been working at VMware full-time

    Pros

The benefits are very good. Generous PTO, forward-thinking managers. Excellent work-life balance.

    Cons

As with any company, the work can be stressful at times; but it isn't often and management is always very supportive.

    Advice to Management

    Keep it up!

I worked at VMware full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, beautiful campus; free food

    Cons

    VERY political, too many culture clashes (VMware, EMC, Dell);

    Advice to Management

    Get a CEO with vision

I worked at VMware full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great Benefits, beautiful campus, intelligent co-workers, owns the Server virtualization market (share)

    Cons

Politics and lack of clear vision within Finance vs. Operations; Unclear BOD direction given acquired by Dell and EMC owns 90% of VMware; need "NEXT BIG THING" for growth as v-SPHERE won't get you there and NSX is only a $1B revenue contributor right now.

    Advice to Management

Realize this is a BIG company now and quit trying to treat it like a start-up

I worked at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and culture, work from home. Management is fantastic and very trusting for the most part. The people are awesome with the exception of a few bad apples, which is true of all companies.

    Cons

False starts and failure to deliver services and features per product roadmap. Loss of customer credibility due to consistent release delays and interoperability challenges across multiple products. Product naming scheme is irritating and needs work.

    Advice to Management

Break down silos between product engineering and sales, actually use sales team and SE input instead of deciding what customers "should" want.

    I worked at VMware full-time

    Pros

Great brand to sell, and flexibility to improve on your craft

    Cons

Since Dell acquired vmware, micro-management is picking up; too many cooks in the kitchen selling the customer, mixed messaging; selling futures in EUC

    Advice to Management

Honest communication, don't hide behind 'title'

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Supportive management, healthy culture, growing company working on a wide range of interesting technology problems

    Cons

Consensus driven culture can be a little slow to move at times. BU driven organization can lead to competing or uncoordinated product efforts. But these are minor complaint in an overall great company.
