    Pros

Great campus (Palo Alto), excellent free food perks in the lunchroom (snacks and such) - including fresh fruit 3 days a week. Smart people, good atmosphere, technical competence, good to excellent managers, a general sense that the company is being led well. Ray Ofarrel is a smart man. And there are many competent and truly innovative people here. Been here a year and would recommend it to anyone. Many other perks.

    Cons

In some ways it is a big company that acts like a startup. Some minor but annoying weaknesses in terms of process (desktop support needs work for example) and for a company this size they some of their internal tools (not the products, tools like helpnow to submit a problem) are just lacking.

    Advice to Management

Take a look at user experience from an employee stand point. Pay more attention to spending some money to improve things internally that in the long run will pay you back.

I worked at VMware (Less than a year)

    Pros

VMware is very enthusiastic about providing interns with the best possible experience. There are many resources available to interns to leverage their short amount of time most effectively. The Palo Alto campus is very beautiful and the food is good.

    Cons

It can be hard to find a way to connect with a wide variety of people outside of your department as an intern because the campus is so large and there is not usually a reason to be wandering around outside your building.

    Advice to Management

Work to simplify the roadmap and product lineup of VMware - even as an employee of the company it is very difficult to understand how all the pieces of the company fit together.

I worked at VMware as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

VMware is certainly one of the most innovative tech companies to work for in the Valley and they offer a lot of cool projects for interns to work on. The intern compensation is great--if not the best/highest, and they have a very responsive and helpful relocation and travel contractor for interns. Also, VMware's Palo Alto campus is seriously the most beautiful of all campuses in the area.

    Cons

The intern program is underwhelming and average. The biggest con is that after working for such an innovative company, I'd actually advise my friends to look into other companies first because of the lackluster program. Some other small cons are that you have to pay for food and VMware really doesn't like giving out free stuff like t-shirts and mugs.

    Advice to Management

If you choose to hire an intern, make sure you are willing to fully commit yourself to helping that intern develop. Don't only be available, but be more active in helping your intern learn and grow; introduce your intern to the team, take them to lunch at least once, and check in without being prompted. Of course it is the responsibility of the intern to continue to grow this relationship, but mentors and managers should take more active steps, especially early in the internship.

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great to be working in a forward looking company full of smart and driven people. Great flexibility with work-at-home policy. Good benefits. Recently upgraded their parental leave for all parents (father, mother and adoption). A number of learning and development programs up for grabs to those looking to grow.

    Cons

Work-at-home also means less interpersonal interaction. A recent change to the annual performance review process does not feel as transparent anymore.

    Advice to Management

Keep investing in your employees. Provide/return to a more transparent performance review process.

    Pros

Great Company to work. You can work with experts in vritualization and cloud. Great environment.

    Cons

Some of the teams have only Indians and Chines. Culture of such teams is bad. They have feudal mindset and harass people who don;t have similar mindset. They even harass fellow countrymen from the same team.

    Advice to Management

Make sure that at least there are 2-3 people in a team of 8-10 who have american values. This will ensure that the company retains its culture.
