I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Focus on employees, people are treated with respect and professional development of employees is in the center of everything the management does.
The local team contributes to key products, features and components.
     Great spirit and cohesion.

    Cons

For R&D the culture is a bit headquarters-centric, which puts pressure on time management (time zone overlap with HC is 2 hours - between 6PM and 8PM EEST)

    Advice to Management

    Keep it up!

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The peope are VMware's biggest asset, and they invest hard in them. Lot of folks to learn from and inspire from for your career.

    Cons

There is a myriad of great charity and out-of-office initiatives here but broadcast does not hit it's full audience. I think it is a matter of "marketing" to get more people on board

I have been working at VMware full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The following is my summary of my experience in Vmware after almost 2 years in the company.

The work at VMware is very focused. There is clear separation between what teams do and there is rarely any overlap between their responsibilities. The company is very innovation driven. While VMware is very focused on providing virtualization software and cloud solutions, it is not afraid to explore other opportunities where a business solution can expand into a leading product.

What matters to me is that VMware takes its employees seriously. The voice of every employee matters. Opinions are evaluated and acted upon. In my team, I have voiced my concerns several times and every member of my team has collaborated together to address the issues I brought up. This gives rooms for contributions not only inside the team, but also in work itself. Good work is rewarded and mangers show their gratitude and support for employees who have helped make important progress. This makes it possible to steadily grow professionally.

Furthermore, the company is concerned in making sure employees work in a productive environment. It attempts to mitigate the stress most employees feel by organizing social events, activities, retreats, etc.

The last thing I enjoy at the company is the atmosphere. Colleagues are kind, friendly and helpful. This facilitates easy communication and allows work to be accomplished quickly and effectively.

    Cons

The only negative aspect is that VMware tends to hire people who have only recently started their education. This leads to a big skill gap between them and other junior employees. That causes slow work progress in certain cases in the first several months of their employment. Also, because they lack knowledge in many areas, only a limited set of responsibilities can be assigned to them.

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent working environment. Lots of possibilities. Can go as far as you are ready to go. Efforts here are being recognized.

    Cons

Lot's of people are staying here just for the nice salary and are that behavior is not being addressed appropriately by management.

    Advice to Management

Let the people who don't care go, it's a win-win, except for the numbers...

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great benefits and remuneration packages.
Market leader and a well-established brand in the IT industry.
Super smart, capable and talented people work in the company in all offices and hierarchical levels.

    Cons

Sometimes in some business units there're powerful people that rely more on politics than they should and follow personal agendas that not always contributes to the company's bright future.

    Advice to Management

Our current strategy and execution seem to be on the right track and recent results are confirming this. Generally you're doing a great job.

    Pros

Experienced professionals; Established processes; Abundant resources

    Cons

Highly dependent on site/team; Hard to have a huge impact

    Advice to Management

Skill first - people should be measured by their skill and not the site they are from.

Freedom from any unnesseacery procedures and bureaucracy, you feel absolutely free from any unnesseacery crap.

    Cons

Unclear timelines + people aren't verry helpful.

    Advice to Management

Start looking @ your employees and stop trying to make someking of reviews that don't matter.

I worked at VMware full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fringe benefits, nice offices, modern technologies. Good if you want to do less work and be paid nice.

    Cons

Bad planing, leading to tight schedules which leads to bad work/life balance.

There are some bad managers I have worked with - very proud, over-confident, and with big ego.

    Advice to Management

Choose your managers wisely. Bad managers make engineers disappointed and ready to leave your company. I would say that most of the times, managers are the key factor software engineers changes companies. VMware Sofia is such very case.

Try to get more feedback from employees (engineers), not only from manager positions. In the end, employees are not only resources.

I have been working at VMware full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice comfortable office with many benefits.
    Some great people work there

    Cons

    Too much politics
Chaotic project management, bad communication between managers and employees
VMW claims to be an analytical company but no evidence or simple analysis in case of any work situations, feelings only matter (like in a cheap TV drama)

    Advice to Management

    Fix project management
    More respect to employees
Use some basic analytical techniques when dealing with any problems
Reading comprehension to management body (and I am not joking at all)
