I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Still has a culture of technical innovation and "engineering driven" approach but that is gradually moved by management and business/political considerations. Salaries are definitely on the higher end and hours can be flexible, benefits are great and various on campus extra activities are plentiful and often fun.

    Cons

Last 2-3 years there was a gradual shift in Company culture from a "large startup" to a more IBM/Oracle style corporate giant with increasingly political atmosphere. Recent acquisition of parents company EMC by Dell and related realignment of workforce continue to add to feeling of somewhat uncertain future for VMware employees.

    Advice to Management

Focus on viable strategies that deliver great products and enabling employees to execute on that and not politics

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great to be working in a forward looking company full of smart and driven people. Great flexibility with work-at-home policy. Good benefits. Recently upgraded their parental leave for all parents (father, mother and adoption). A number of learning and development programs up for grabs to those looking to grow.

    Cons

Work-at-home also means less interpersonal interaction. A recent change to the annual performance review process does not feel as transparent anymore.

    Advice to Management

Keep investing in your employees. Provide/return to a more transparent performance review process.

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good compensation and benefits, good people

    Cons

Very varied according to group you're in. Some groups are mature but that means they have travel restrictions and no budget, while some groups are like start-ups.

    Advice to Management

Communicate more & work harder to integrate remote employees. One team I was in had no travel - making for total isolation. Team I'm now with gets to attend Kick Off, Tech Summit etc. which feels great, it's worth getting the Kool Aid twice a year.

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Depending on your manager and team, it can be a great, inspiring, fresh place to work in. The Palo Alto campus is one of the best places ever although once you get in your cube, nothing is different. Benefits are matching competitor offerings. Work from home gives you less expenses and almost totally flexible working hours.

    Cons

Again, depending on your manager and team, it can be hell. Stay away from PSO related jobs as they will try to put you on 100% travel. Flexible working from home hours might also mean that you have conference calls from the US with Australia and / or China regularly..

    Advice to Management

Seriously focus on employee mobility between positions. The company always highlights that they support cross-team movement but when it comes to it, every manager is sad and some might be blocking you from moving around.

"Pockets of cronyism from other company " leadership" cultures (Oracle and SAP), but great actual front line people working with clients."

    Pros

Incredible potential to create a scalable high performing platform for Cloud Automation , operations and management.

    Cons

Cronyism in middle management in Enterprise and Professional services. Oracle and SAP transplanted "in your face" leadership style causing low morale and higher attrition rates. Poor communication and excessive inter group politics for such a small group.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the middle management who just focus on excessive control and fear tactics and hire leaders who intact change for the better for ALL employees.

I worked at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

All VMware offices around the world are similar: Spotless, efficient, and with heathy refreshments always available. The Management team in my department were fantastic. Expect to work hard and be rewarded and recognized for your accomplishments. While I was hired directly into VMware, I worked with a number of people coming in from acquisitions. Those coming onboard through the M&A process can expect a few process bumps, but you will be part of the VMware family on day one. Best path to success for anyone at this company is to be fluid and flexible - never a dull moment at VMware.

    Cons

There aren't many. The few issues I ran into are common across all moderately sized companies going through rapid growth and M&A activities.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work. Never settle for anything less than the best engineering talent. With so much M&A, give as much attention, focus, and love to better integration of the entire product stack.

    Pros

    Cutting Edge Products
    Biggest Market Share - Virtulization/Cloud
25000 Partners w97% of fortune 500 as customers
Internal communication platforms are great for collaboration

    Cons

Fast paced environment with a very entrepreneurial feel, which is good and bad. Travel policy is a lot less lenient than the consulting firm I came from.

    Advice to Management

Haven't been here long enough to tell but it seems like upper management leaves the micro managing to you and they worry about the macro. They are very interested in your professional growth and will let you know when you've done a good job.

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Innovative company, on the fringe of the technology industry. Great pay, great benefits.

    Cons

The bay area is super competitive, and top talent has been leaving.

    Advice to Management

Do as much as you can to retain your highly skilled and talented employees. Consider new offices in hot technology regions.
