I worked at VNL full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Had the potential to bring affordable solar powered telecom and broadband internet to billions of people, were loved by the West and gained many international awards.

    Cons

Very, very, very political. Sycophants surround the CEO who is the only one ever allowed to make ANY decision however small. Certain individuals used their proximity to CEO to keep their jobs while doing nothing of value. Press embargoes killed the potential of the company. Called in repeatedly over weekends to perform work and waited sometimes 12 hours to never have a meeting at all. Called back in the next day for the same. No respect at all for people's time, experience or talents. Told what to do and not allowed to do anything else except precisely what you are told. Ordered to do unethical things, like bringing unlicensed telecom equipment into countries in our own personal baggage. Forced to make promises to customers that were never going to be fulfilled, yet left having to explain to angry customers why their projects weren't completed to specifications.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the sycophants. Start listening to the great people you used to have in the firm on how you can get back to where you were and get your momentum back. You still have a chance to change the world. It could have been one of the greatest companies ever built, but you squandered it with petty politics and siloing departments.
