    No opinion of CEO

I worked at VSP Vision Care full-time for more than a year

    Pros

There were some good, hardworking and honest people.

    Cons

Very low pay as they take advantage not much options in the Sacramento area. Losing businesses. Yet lavishes on senior management with annual bonuses enough for house down payment. Engagement surveys not anonymous, people afraid of retribution. Clique, it's who you know.

    Advice to Management

    Clean house.

I have been working at VSP Vision Care full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

People are nice Family friendly place- if you have to leave a little early for your kid's soccer match, people don't even think twice about it. Workload is super manageable. Pull an all-nighter to meet a deadline? Nah, just push the deadline out.

    Cons

Career Paths? Nope. Individual Contributor and Management tracks are completely separate (think military: enlisted and officer). If you are a skilled professional who may want to eventually lead a team, then you will have to go backwards and supervise operational task teams (think call center, Ops support) first. 5% cap on raise for promotions on individual contributor track. Your initial salary will be the primary factor...

    Advice to Management

The workforce architecture is broken and creates significant disincentives for your best and brightest to stay. The workforce demographics skew older and there is no meaningful leadership development positions or opportunities for the next generation to learn how to fill management roles. It doesn't matter how awesome the strategy is from the C suite if you don't have the talent to execute. Not sure what happens first,...

I worked at VSP Vision Care for more than 3 years

    Pros

They seem to attract talent (which leads to a con). There are some intriguing ideas (also leading to another con). Certainly well known in the area and looks good on a resume to have worked there. There are a lot of really good people at VSP. Jim McGrann is a good president.

    Cons

HR and Marketing run this company. This leads to so many problems. One of those groups will make a decision, technical teams aren't informed, and then projects are affected and the technical teams take the fall. While they appear to attract talent, they outright refuse to be competitive in the marketplace and expect people to take a massive pay cut (30-50%) to work there. It can literally take months to even years...

    Advice to Management

Cut the dead weight, value true talent, and don't wait until bad employees become rape-y (yes, rape-y), before you decide to deal with them.
