I worked at VSP Vision Care (Less than a year)

    Pros

The Intern program at VSP is well-rounded that aims at helping the interns grow and develop corporate skills. There were a lot of workshops held to help us understand the work culture at VSP and learn new technologies. We also had various career development workshops which helped with our networking skills. There were many social events like Cake Day, Team Lunch, Potluck etc. A great company to start as an Intern and grow.

    Cons

    No H1b visa sponsorship done.

I have been working at VSP Vision Care full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very stable company, laid-back work environment, flexible schedule, emphasis on healthy lifestyle

    Cons

Has lost that "family style" culture that made it one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For, benefits used to be some of the best in the industry but are now just status-quo, emphasis on training is almost completely absent

    Advice to Management

Take a step back and look at what the company was 10 years ago when it routinely made the list of America's top-100 companies to work for. Stop trying to make VSP just like every other company out there. We are not Google. VSP used to have it's own unique culture.

    Pros

Good environment to learn and growth, people are nice, friendly and willing to help.

    Cons

Pay rate is low for intern. And some people still able to stay here without doing any work. One of my team member had not done any work for 3 months but she still stay, company need to be more strict and kick out useless people

I have been working at VSP Vision Care full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice folks. decent EA, somewhat forward thinking, good collaboration, good educational reimbursement, ok but shrinking benefits, decent tools, accommodating schedule, mostly competent people.

    Cons

Maybe they they buy before they build too often, lateral moves difficult to achieve, teams are often too siloed.

    Pros

Friendly people, good place to begin building career. Management is easy to work with. Really flexible with students.

    Cons

Interns usually QA, little to no development (which is something many CS majors try to pursue.)

I have been working at VSP Vision Care full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The technology department (GTS) is going through a reorganization and facility relocation to a more open, modern, and collaborative environment. Engineers are collegial and very cooperative. Also going through a series of technology updates giving ample opportunities to work in leading edge architecture - often feels like a start-up but isn't. VSP expects a high degree of commitment, expertise and excellence from its engineers, but rewards it with lots of flexibility and above-average benefits.

    Cons

Change can happen slowly. This isn't always a bad thing, but there's a lot of history and a certain degree of resistance to new ideas. This is changing. There's also a mountain of legacy technology and sometimes advancements have to take a back seat to fixing problems in current production systems. It can be disappointing to build up a head of steam on a new initiative only to be sidetracked with an urgent change or bug fix. Hopefully the further down the tech update path we get, the less this will be a problem.

    Advice to Management

More support for entrepreneurialism. The executive staff says they want it, but new ideas and initiatives are difficult to get support for. Create opportunities for staff to innovate and champion the developments that come out of that process.
