I worked at VWR (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent work life balance. Great coworkers. Real team atmosphere. Fun place to spend 40 hours a week and get the jobs done. Benefits were good and the retirement was excellent.

    Cons

Not a whole lot of negatives to report in hind site. My manager was fantastic but I could tell that ones experience at VWR depended a lot of who you report to. Some managers or directors were incredibly strict and not interested in finding better solutions to problems. "Because we've always done it that way" seemed to be a prevailing attitude.

    Advice to Management

VWR seemed to be successful in spite of themselves. There are many employees there with excellent ideas and if they would only entertain them, I believe they could finally overtake their number one competitor. Just my humble opinion.

    Approves of CEO

    Pros

The people! People are friendly, intelligent and hard working (for the most part). Work is interesting, company is up and coming, great work life balance. Trying hard to bring in top talent

    Cons

Company is in transition - growing fast, which is good, but still need to replace some associates who aren't willing to change with the company.

    Advice to Management

Keep the change coming, and keep bringing in new staff who can handle it.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

VWR gives access to a wide range of suppliers. Best is to network and find a job at one of the suppliers.

    Cons

Only way to advance is to come from the military. Unqualified vets receive preferencial treatment and promotions for no reason.

    Advice to Management

VWR management needs to review the hiring practices of middle managers. Some managers hire based on unfair practices not based on job qualifications or experience but based on superficial reasons.

    Pros

Lots of different products to learn about and sale
Customers know a lot and can teach

    Cons

Senior management does not Listen to employees, pays only lip service
Has an extra layer of sales management who do very little (some area VP's)
Management singles out reps that voice their opinions publicly for dismissal
Pay scale way Below other medical sales reps (like Pharma)
Benefit have been cut and need improvement
Competitior has a much bigger market share
    Lots of internal confusion
    High turnover of sales people

    Advice to Management

    1) Let employees rate their managers so you can see management issues exist
    2) Improve your global and national account agreement. Make them enforceable
    3) Improve sales commission and make them easier to obtain (Not a 5 bucket system)
    4) Get rid of dead weight in all areas. VWR has lots of people just "hanging on" till retirement
    5) Restore benefits to previous levels
    6) Listen to sales and operations by letting sales and operations put together a team to identify issues at the company to John Ballbach bypassing layers where issues exist.
